Shock installed extension question.

Car: Base 91 'bird
Engine: 3.1 v6
Transmission: 4L60
Axle/Gears: 9-bolt 3.27 & PBR
Shock installed extension question.
A shock piston has a certain length of travel and I assume that the expected extension in a stock set up would be about half way. Other than the available travel does it make any difference to the behavior of the shock if it is mounted so the extension is significantly away from half way? e.g. when a car is lowered the shock is more compressed to start with than stock.

Yes it matters.
The shock is designed to have different damping near the center of its travel (normal smooth-road behavior) vs near full travel (bouncing violently to the extremes).
That's why they make shocks specifically for lowered / raised vehicles.
