Re: 700r4
The later ones are better; have some improvements where they actually learned from field experience and applied it to customer well-being; but "no good"... that's a bit over-the-top. How many miles you got on your 86? Is that "no good"?
I'd be real careful to get one out of a F-body if possible, in addition to trying to shoot for a later one. Governor calibration and various other internal properties differ from one car type to another. You don't want a transmission that behaves like Grandma's Caprice or a dump truck.

If the replacement trans came from anything other than an F-body, keep the extension housing from the original transmission so you retain the torque arm mount.

Go to: https://www.700r4l60e.com/store/home.php?cat=19 This will give you some kits to choose from for the 1982 - 1986 units. If you have the late 1987 - 1993 transmission then the kits are on that page also. The early 1987 units used the type 1 valve body and the late 1987 through 1993 units used type 2 valve body.

In 1987 (and even on some of the very-late-1986 cars), a number of improvements were made to the 700R4, the most prominent of which was a change to the auxiliary valve body with the main body and stronger components.
The later tranny has a slightly deeper pan to accommodate the auxiliary valve body. To make certain identification, GM changed the pattern of markings on the pan bottom where the magnet is located. These markings are visible from the underside, near a rearward corner, forming a square shape of size 1.75 inches or so. The later pans (accommodating the auxiliary valve body) have unequal length lines (one set is longer than the rest) unlike the earlier pans which have all lines equal length. Also, behind the torque converter, look for a casting number on the front pump. If the last three digits are "732", then you have the new, improved version of the 700-R4.
