17 degree trans offset, can i put a trans straight up?

I have a 91 camaro that im installing a t56 into. I have a weir bellhousing and it sits the trans in the nomal upright position, instead of the 17 degree position on our cars. Btw why is it athat way anyway? I looked all over and found very little info on it. So i want to know you guys opinion on using it. My buddy owns a shop and i can have him drill and tap the 17 degree in, but why if i dont have to. Anybody try it this one before???

It was a way to put the shifter position in a similar lateral placement as the 4 speeds before it.

The T56 shifter position isn't in a bad place.

So . . .why the Weir?

Re: 17 degree trans offset, can i put a trans straight up?

Im using the weir cause no bellhousing came with the trans and the stock t5 i had seemed like a dinky pos to strap to a 500 hp 383. I got 11 in mcloud clutch set up, a new input shaft and t56 midplate with hydraulic throw out on the cheap. Couldnt say no. Im guessing ill have to shim the sphon crossmember to get it straight and im sure the shifter will be a lil off center.

You'll trim the floor to the rear.

I have an LS T56 to sbc fix that I might want to run past you in a few days.

On a T5 car, you shouldn't have to cut anything laterally. Just further towards the rear.

Cut it after the trans. is in and suit the opening to your shifter boot / shifter handle / console.
