700R4 has to warm up to shift properly
I have a 700r4 and well...long story short. When I first start the car for when I do decide to drive it, I have to let it warm up before it will shift properly. If I just start it and go, it won't shift out of first. It seems like it takes couple of stop and go's to finally start shifting correctly. Once it's warm, it shifts like a champ. The transmission feels strong once it's warmed up. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Re: 700R4 has to warm up to shift properly
Is this something that just started happening? History of trans, history of problem, etc would be helpful here. Will it shift into second after getting up higher in the rpms and then letting off the gas quickly? I think it's common to have the shift characteristics (timing) vary some when the trans is cold vs hot. I've noticed this on any 700r4 I've ever had.

After thinking about it. It didn't start happening until the block was swapped out. Prior to that, I could turn the key and go. What happenes, is if I don't allow like 5-10mins to "warm up" it will just rev up and I get scared and let off the gas. That's when I decided to allow to idle before driving it for the first time for the day. Its garaged, its my baby! I can tell when its about ti work correctly cause it will shift at exactly 4k. I did try to let off the gas to see if it would shift and it won't. I tried to start off in first and manually shift through the gears but it don't matter, it won't shift til like a few mins or so. But once its warm, it feels like a real strong transmission. It shifts great. I had a 305 tpi then swapped with a 350 block but we used the 305comp with a stage 2 chip. I know I'll get flack for that but it runs great..probably not to its fullest potential.

Generally, that symptom is indicative of shrunken or worn-out Seals...
Somewhere inside of the Transmission.
Time for a Rebuild.

Re: 700R4 has to warm up to shift properly
I had the exact same issue with my 700r after I installed a transgo shift kit. Everything was fine before install then after nothing but 1st gear when cold. Ended up being a torn valve body gasket in the corner. Replaced the valve body gasket and problem was solved.
