4th gen rear wheel studs
Hey fellas,
i've got a problem. I broke a wheel stud on my 4th gen rear which happens to have a traction control or abs ring on it. I can't get the wheel studs to clear. I know that you have to remove the axle and have it pressed off then back on but since I have a 3rd gen I really don't need it. My question is can I air chisel it off and save some time and money or does it need to be there?

Re: 4th gen rear wheel studs
A local shop[ replaced 2 of my wheels studs on my 9-bolt on one axle by using air tools to drive the bad stud out then an air impact to pull the new stud in. Just need to see if there is any room between the wheel flange (axle end) & the backing place for the stud to clear going out or the new one coming in.

Re: 4th gen rear wheel studs
I've pushed a broken wheel lug out with a center punch and mallet and pulled one back in with a 4 way and using an over-sized lugnut as a spacer. This was on non-abs brakes but I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as you have clearance between the flange and the backing plate.

Re: 4th gen rear wheel studs
Sorry..usually when you get the splined part out you have lots of wiggle room to get the rest of the stud out. I don't have a 4th gen so i'm not familiar with the. But Hey, I guess you'll need to pull the axle.

Yes....We can read, but if you are going to insult people then nobody will help you.
You can cut the stud you want to get out & until you actusally TRY to put the new one in, you will not KNOW that it can't be put in. You'd be surprised at what a little extra effort will get you.
Or drill a hole in the brake backing plate for the stud to go through to reach the axle flange. The axle ends are very similar so I seriously doubt that a new stud cannot be put in without pulling the axle.
Worst case? Pull the diff cover, pull out the c-clip retainer & pull the axle. It isn't that hard to do. Sometimes trying short cuts cost you more than you thought you were gonna save.
I duuno about the ABS ring, but if you don't need it & removing it isn't gonna harm the axle then cut it off.

Post #5....Suggesting we are posting without reading first is insulting.
But...I'm done.
Are you reading before posting? I already told you.....
Drill a hole.
Cut the ring.
Or stop looking for take a short cut & do it correctly by pulling the axle.
Those are your only 3 options. Choose one.

Re: 4th gen rear wheel studs
Pop the axle out; use a bearing splitter on the tone ring. Don't even need a press, you can just use a hammer.
Piece o cake.
Piece o cake.

Re: 4th gen rear wheel studs
Pulled the axles, removed them with a pry bar. Going to put in my Detroit locker and Richmond 4.10 gears since it's all apart anyway and reassemble tomorrow.
