should I rebuild my 700R4 or swap in a TH350 or TH400
The other day I was cruising down the freeway at 65 with the cruise control on. All of a sudden the transmission shifted out of overdrive and into drive. So I took the next exit to check things out. I rolled up to a stop sign, and as I started crawl through the intersection. The car lurched back and worth and this horrible noise started. The will moved forward, but only with a grinding noise. I also have no reverse gear anymore. So I'm guessing the transmission went out. I double checked the fluid and it has plenty. So now my question is, should I rebuild the 700R4 or swap in a TH350 or a TH400. What do you guys think will be the cheapest and best thing to do?

Do you need the overdrive? Do you use the car on the free way a lot? If so I would say rebuild the 700R4.

Its rarely on the freeway. But I do like having the overdrive option.

Swapping a TH350 or 400 is going to also require additional mods to the car. I believe they make cross members for this but it's not a straight up swap.
In my opinion, that overdrive makes it worth it if you're not taking it to the strip. I drive my DD truck with a TH350 only city no highway around and wish it had overdrive, especially at the pump lol.
I'd rebuild the 700r4

Which rebuild kit would be best for it? It still has the stock 305 in front of it.

Although I'm no expert in anything related to transmissions, I would recommend a mild rebuild kit from Probuilt Automatics. Everyone on this forum seems very happy with the service and products they provide. A mild kit would make that tranny virtually indestructible behind your stock 305. It would shift better too...
