t56 leak help

I have a leak coming from the joint/seal between the back (tail) housing and the main housing of the T56. I actually had this leak since the trans came back from being rebuilt but i onyl noticed it after the trans was installed and everything was put together.... no way i was pulling it all apart again. the leak is very slow but non the less still a leak that begins to pool in the garage after a few weeks. i have been adding a 1/4 qt or so here and there. i dont drive the car much cause its just too hot out but want to fix this before it starts cooling down now so i can drive more.

anyways, can i just disconnect the driveshaft and unbolt the rear (tail) housing from the T56 and pull it back a couple inches - enough so i can clean off the sealant/rtv thats there and put a new seal in then bolt it back up so i dont have to pull the entire trans? the car is level on blocks if that matters.

let me know your thoughts. i really dont want to try and pull the entire trans.

if i have to pull the trans how hard is it to reseal this portion of the housing? do i have to worry about things coming apart/loose? should i just have a shop do it? im capable of doing any of the work if i have decent direction/guidance - never did anything with a trans before.

thanks everyone

Re: t56 leak help

You are really going to have to pull the trans. It would be near impossible to get everything lined up unless the trans is sitting vertical. My trans leaks in the same spot and I know I have to pull it I just haven't had the time plus my lift is tied up at the moment so I just keep it topped off.

Where abouts on Long Island are you?

Re: t56 leak help

Im in Bellmore. I figured i'd have no choice lol. nothing on this car has been easy.

I also thought about draining the trans and then cutting as much of the gasketing material as i could with a razor blade along the bottom and let it sit for a week or two to let as much fluid drip out as possible. then try to wipe it clean and press in some gasketing seal into the joint and extend up about half way on each side. this is obviously the easy way out but i guess its not really reliable.

i guess im just going to start pulling things today.

Re: t56 leak help

i agree, to do it right and for it to seal the trans will need to come out. when you are going back on with the tail housing make sure the little plastic thing behind the bearing race is lined up in the channel so the race will fully seat.

26 ft lb is the tq spec for those bolts BTW.
