I am looking for a rebuild kit for my stock transmission out of my 91 that will let the tranny handle around 450hp. I would like to find a kit that will build it as strong as possible. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am really torn on this. I was budgeting about 600$ total to rebuild my transmission. 300$ parts 300$ labor. If I buy the pro-built kit I am going to have to rebuild the tranny myself. I have zero experience rebuilding transmissions and don't want to ruin a 600$ kit.

My advice take it or leave it, atleast double even triple your trans budget if you want it to live. I've been thru 18 or so transmissions. Most were just stock type rebuilds and weren't ment to hold power but I kept pushing them..
If I were to do it over again knowing what I know now I would drop 3k on the trans the 1st time and be done with it.

I called a few places before, asking how much they would charge to rebuild the tranny with one of these (<550hp) kits. None of them would touch it unless they ordered (and marked the price up 25%) their own kit and then installed it.Their prices were in the $1300-$1800 range.

i paid $1200 to rebuild my 700r4 which is rated at 450HP and has a Transgo shift kit along with many other up grades

I have not figured out a way to make $300 go far enough to support a 450 hp build.

I built my 4l60e with the monster in a box kit and had more hard parts that were bad and cost me 2400 dollars in parts with aftermarket torque convertor

You got to look at it from their end. I mean you bring in part x and want them to install it and stand behind it. He doesn't know where part x comes from. My father inlaw works in a machine shop and runs into this all the time. Sure he gets a little from parts but he knows the parts he is selling are good and has used them for years and he stands behind them if they fail. 1300 to 1800 for a good rebuild is pretty good if they are building it to handle some power. The last auto I had rebuilt cost me 2300.

Hi, nicelysedated! I too would recommend dana at probuilt automatics for your choice for a rebuild kit.Now while your rebuilding your transmission is the time to FIX it and upgrade it. If you have pretty good mechanical skills im sure you can pull it off.A good large clean work area is a must and plenty of time.Read up on rebuilding the 700r and get a atsg service manual prior to the rebuild.Spend some time reading the book and looking over everything a few times before you tackle it.

Im currently rebuilding my 700r4 (taking time) and have purchased a kit from dana at probuilt.Heck of a guy and heck of a service.I recently had a vette that im positive someone else here in town at one point used his kit,It was awesome.Smooth at part throttle but fast shifting and at WOT nice firm super fast shifts.

My experience with probuilt has been a very pleasant one. I mean not only has the guy been doing this stuff for along long time i actually like him easy going and strait forward.Ill continue to go though him just due to his character (not sure if that's spellteded right).Transgo products are very good stuff in my opinion even though you might find a sour apple in the bunch of techs there----> (JIM). Add a couple hundred bucks to that figure and i think you'll come out smiling.Figure on some internal parts being bad or severely worn for sure. I personally have about 1k in mine minus my torque converter.Dana at probuilt will help you with any questions you might have along the way he is a really nice guy.Feel free to throw him some extra bucks down for him if you keep him on the phone alot like i did lol.

Dont forget there are some special tools needed and are expensive to buy.I had a trans shop tap in the bushings for 60$ The spring compressor is a must as well but imo any other specialty tool can be improvised.Lip seal tool is nifty i made mine from steel wire and a piano wire.

The way i am personally i wont ever pay someone else to do a job for me just be cause of the money i save and because i know it was done right with the parts i KNOW are in it.But hey,that's just me.If i was going to have someone else do it it would be dana.He is level headed strait shooter imo.Most of the trans shops around this area are full of speed junkies and shady characters.I'm sure there are some good people around but i prefer not to roll the dice.

Again research research research! Its the key to completing your objective successfully and accomplishing the best possible outcome. I hope im not giving bad advise here as i do not know the scope of your mechanical ability's.Good luck to you and hope you get the build you hope for!

The TCI Streetfighter kit is about $250, and builds the transmission to the level of handling 450hp. If you include the front and rear 5-pinion planetary sets, you gain 50% strength over the older 4 pinion units. These are about $250-$300 for the front and rear. They also have several other levels of kit, depending on your application and desired level of build.

Ya know, I just did an overhaul with the help I a local tranny fella in his shop. The entire process, from cleaning the 20+ years of grime off to putting it in the back of my truck took a total of about 6 hours. I got a steel/clutch kit (high energy Brog Warner kit) and seals AND a 2200 stall (woven style) for under 350 oh and a SK-700 transgo shift kit... I believe I could have done it myself if I would have had a few extra tools... I'm going to build my th400 to handle 1000+ hp n a few weeks just to get some practice
