swapped iroc rear end???

hey guys a bought a 88 iroc, i already owned my baby a 84 camaro sport coupe. and i swapped the rear end into my 84, but when it was in the air, i could hold one disc brake and spin the other one, doesnt that mean its not a posi rear end????

then as my friend and i moved on, i saw the fill plug on the diff was a rubber gromet, like a JEEP!!!! and me and my friend was like wtf? it wasnt the 3/8 screw like every other chevy ive seen

so then we started to wonder if it was the origional rear end to the iroc.

does anyone no how to read/decode the parts id sticker in the glove box lol?

Drop the cover and take a peek to verify what the rear is equipped with.

Sounds like a typical 9-bolt. Nothing unusual.

If you're swapping from drums to discs, yes. Hopefully, your 84 has the alum metric combination valve (generally 84+.). If not, and it has the old-style SAE iron valve, you may have trouble in finding one.

Though the following link concerns 10-bolts, you may find the info on combination valves, master cylinders, parking brake cables and speedo gears interesting:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...-10-bolts.html

Re: swapped iroc rear end???

thanks for the info.

I believe both the 84, and 88 combo valves r the same, or at least they look the same. but some of the brake lines go in at differnt places. so on one there is an empty spot, and the same spot on the other one has a line? will they still swap over?
it looks like the empty spot have like screw in plug that can maybe moved to the other location?

Re: swapped iroc rear end???

The lines are different between the iron and alum valves. There are pics/info in the above link.

Re: swapped iroc rear end???

Yup, sounds like just yerbasic typical 9-bolt. The reason it looks like a Jeep rear is because it's a Borg-Warner product, which is what Cheeeep also uses. Sounds like the posi is completely worn out, as usual. Search the forum about "cones" and "machining" to find out more.

The brake combo valves are different, although they look the same.

THe old crappy cast-iron rear discs have CONSIDERABLY different hydraulic requirements from drums. They work poorly enough even when correctly assembled, most of the time; using the wrong CV just about guarantees that they won't ever do anything at all. Yes you need to swap it over. THen, replace the calipers, but put the "recall kit" in them before installing them; and consider modifying the CV, which you should also be able to find by searching; and since they aren't really "self adjusting" but rather adjust ONLY when you use the parking brake and then only in tiny increments, make sure you pull that handle EVERY SINGLE time you park the car, NO EXCEPTIONS, and twice on Sundays just for good measure.

No you can't move the plug. The little valve and spring and all the other innards is loaded into it behind that.

Ive been looking to replacing the calipers, there is an auto store near my house that i can get aluminum calipers, u think aluminum ones r good? and what is the recall kit?

You say the rear end is a bog warner rear? well does that mean it has posi for sure? cause i did a burnout today, and i only got 1 tire to smoke. i plan on opening it up in the next couple of weeks to service it anyway, but til then its a mistery to me if its a posi or not

The alum calipers aren't a simple bolt-up. Check the link I provide above for links to the 1LE (alum calipers) modification and the recall kit.

The iron is SAE, the alum metric, so the threads won't fit. A search may turn up some suggestions. The easiest solution would be to find an iron disc/disc combination valve, which would be a simple bolt-in.

You might try the classifieds.

http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/i208.html

This from the above link:

Can I Swap in Larger Discs and Calipers?
Yes. The following link details the PBR swap:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/fa...iscs-89-a.html (82-88 Discs to 89-92/Pics and Part Numbers)
However, check with Ed Miller’s site for many other possibilities, such as LS1's:
