What goes here in the side of my transmission?
First off it is a 1989 worldclass t5 borg warner
My first thought is the speedometer gear since i can see a second gear at the end of the whole. I need to know how it attached(pressed in, threaded)
My mechanic had installed this and it came out on the highway which resulted in a blown up transmission and 135 dollar towing fee. (all of the fluid poored out)
Is my mechanic responsible? I had him swap transmissions to this one and i remember him having to swap this part over.

I would think the mechanic is responsible. Might have to call a lawyer and get their opinion.

so sorry for your mechanic, but he IS responsible.....that's why they charge you 65 to 95 an hour.....you relied on his work, it failed.......unless you've got lot of dought and don't wish to be bothered by it.....

Re: What goes here in the side of my transmission?
Bro, I am a mechanic and if there is one thing I HATE is other idit-mechanics that take advantage of clients. It gives us honest mechanics a bad rep and we are the guys that end up paying for it in the end. I agree with HotrodIn, get a lawyer to call him up and set things straight. 7 years ago I had one pulled on me with a 65 GMC 1000 with the 305 5.0 V-6, not v-8, V-6 a true one of a kind. Anyways I bought the truck having been parked in a field for 2 years. Bad news, it took me 3 months to try and get that thing running right just to drive it in the street. Well I ended up taking it to a mechanic that my parents used at the time. BAD IDEA. The guy was trying to sell a Rochester 2-barrel carb, and I had some weird brand, I think it might of actually been weber, which here in Brasil, where I am temporarily, is pretty common. Well the guy went and put a hole in my carb float and tried to patch it saying that it was already sunk and he tried to fix it....yeah with a pound of solder. He kept on me to try and buy his piece of junk carb and well I bought a new float that wasn't even the right type but worked, and he complained about it and said this and that about. In the end, I never went back there ever again. So yeah bro ....

Sorry that happened to your car. I've had that happen (large TH350 and 700-R4 speedo sleeves aren't the same!) but luckily caught it in time.
The trans doesn't look "new" - Is the transmission the one that was in the car when you bought it this year? Based on your post about him charging $500 to work on the clutch release in detail to get it working, I'd say
A - he didn't do you any favours
B - if the transmission worked properly when you left the shoppe, then it was specifically screwed by the speedo sleeve coming out.
C - if he worked on the engine and left the oil filter loose... I think that answers your question

Even if the speedo gear bullet "fell out", it would still be attached to the end of your speedo cable, and hanging from under the car. The gear might have fallen out of the bullet.
In your picture, to the left of the speedo hole, is a tapped hole. There should have been a retainer plate, like half a dog bone, that holds the bullet in, and is bolted done into that threaded hole.

well i drove 500 miles with it hangin and probably scraping the highway so that explains why it fell off completely from the connector

this might be off topic but are you sure your motor is a 350, you might want to check cause everybody lies about that when they sell a f-body.
