best stall speed for full bolt on l98

im planning on having my 700r4 rebuilt, this transmission shifts early and never hit my power range. ive played with the t.v cable and it always resets it self. i would like it to shift around 5300rpms maybe 5400 from first to second. Ill be installing a b&m mega.

what would be the best stall speed. i know the cam and the converter go together but i need to build the trans a few years before i build a motor. Im running a l98 stealthram, headers, 3" flowmaster, msd, cai, afpr, pcm for less tune, 3:73 gears and i plan on adding 1.6rr. im thinking about 3000 stall would be a nice boost. Keep in mind this is a fair weather 5000k a year car that might see the track 2 times a year.

In a few years my goal is to have a 383 stealthram, afr 195 and hope to have 475 to the crank. is it possible to have a torque converter that will work well with both motors?

anywhere from 3000-3500 lockup converter. Vigilante makes one of the best

No, take the converter out and send itback for a restall for the new motor. Only cost around 200-300 bucks to do. So you buy a 550-900 dollar converter for the bolt on car, and when the 383 is ready, send it back for a restall. Thats how you do it. that 383 with astealth ram will likely want 3600 stall or so depending on the cam.

The bolt on L98 I had with those same mods, I ran 2800 with 3.42 gears. 1.70-1.71 60 foots. ran 12.95 at 103.8. 2800 is a great overall converter for mix of street and strip with bolt on L98's

Peak torque will be in the mid 3000 range but be fairly flat from 3000 to almost 4000. Peak hp is 5100 rpm and falling off quick with stock cam, so shift at 5400 is good idea. I shifted at 5500.

3000 stall will work if more drag but since you have 3.73's i'd go smaller, shoot for 2800

hey thanks orr, noticed you had a similar setup once apon a time. was gonna pm ya but figured you might show up here.

i guess i want a converter to come in just before my peak torque. If its for street, a few hundred below. i like the idea of the converter exchange.

I will be using a b&m mega... now my upshifts will be controlled by manual shifting to a point. Im not interested in downshifting manually, so i figure i will have to install govener weights (i need to research this still). At the moment car shifts at 4800 if im lucky. Getting it to shift at 5300-5400rpms would be great along with some aggressive down shifts so i dont get bogged down eg. in second when it should be in first. This is really holding my car back!

Re: best stall speed for full bolt on l98

My 700r4 shifted around 5500 on its own so I was lucky enough to not need governor weights. Based on the power curve, i think thats a great point to shift at with an HSR L98.

I think you'd be happy either way with 3000 or 2800. Even 2600 should do good with that gear. 60 foots on sticky tires and good suspension work should get you 1.70's all day long in good air.

2600-3000 is what I was going to say too. But the stall speed varies on the engine combo etc. I love my 2800 vigilante
