700r4(4l60) need help

i searched this site and internet and couldn't find what i need answered. here's what i am dealing with. i start in low and upshift until overdrive. i turn at the light and go to hit 2nd. the motor just revs. drop back to 1st and just revs. up to od and finally gets back under power. i was still coasting just over 30mph as it caught. when i came up to the next stop. nothing just revs. any forward position on shifter just revs. park and reverse work. some people say they have this problem but their car creeps forward at like 4k rpms. mine has no forward motion at any rpm.

88 t/a 350tpi full exhaust is the only real mod i have. the trans is a jasper replaced 4 years ago and the torque converter is a tci sizzler 1700 put in less than a year ago.

is the trans done or is there something i can do to fix it. i have never done internal work on a trans but i know info is everywhere. any and all suggestions would at least get me started in a direction.

thanks in advance.

I'm no tranny expert - but sounds like it's slipping in all gears forward - not good. Have you tried resetting the TV cable? https://www.thirdgen.org/detent

Re: 700r4(4l60) need help

Thats what mine did. just didnt get to the complet shut down. mine lost everything but first, reverse, and park/neutral. i took it to a reputable transmission repair shop that my uncle know the owner. he was saying that it sounds like the bands were messed up. i ended up buying a custom 700r4 that was built up to handle what i'm currently building for the car. i would take it to a shop and have it fixed if you dont plan on modding your engine at all. its usually about 1000-1500 for them to rebuild it.

if the tv cable was completly disconected it would still have foward driving gears. it just wouldn't drive/shift right.

Re: 700r4(4l60) need help

if you want to try it yourself, start with a rebuild kit. They usually have all the wear items in it plus what each kit varies in hard parts.

It's a shame that local tranny shops charge almost as much for a standard rebuild as what other places charge for a 'built' tranny with no core return.

Talk to some local car club guys, any car club that has chevy's, and see if anyone has a line on a local that rebuilds trannies on the side. I lucked into a $500 rebuild, took the guy a week, and he was apologizing to me for the long time spent. I handed him the tranny and a list of parts I wanted and had him supply equal quality, so I got a really good beefy rebuild for cheap.

I'll take a swag and say the drum or sprag. Either way, you best have it completely torn down.

Re: 700r4(4l60) need help

I'm sure that you have already done this but make sure it full of fluid. Some of the THM 400 had the wrong stick from factory and when the stick said it was full you could turn a corner and they would slip. This most likley isn't the case but it wouldn't hurt to look. Pull the pan and see what is hanging out in there.
The gentleman from the previous post is right you can get a performance rebuild for about the same price as some of local shops change. When I say performance rebuild I mean performance not just stock clutches with a shift kit or a blocked acc valve.

Re: 700r4(4l60) need help

yes the fluid level was first thing checked. i dismissed idea of tv cable since i would still have driveability if that was the problem. i think i need to decide whether or not to get a used one for now or try to rebuild it. i have looked up built trannys. and cost of a shop rebuilding it. there are so may how to's on the internet. i actually just downloaded gm atsg video and the gm 700r4/4l60 114page guide. could a rebuild be done in 2 days or would it take longer? i would need to know what kit to get though. i have seen so many and not knowing what is wrong with it i would like a thorough kit.

i found one on ebay for under $200 that includes: OUR MOST POPULAR KIT NOW FEATURING THE "BEAST" SUNSHELL!!!!!

IN THIS KIT YOU WILL GET PRECISION INTERNATIONAL PAPER AND RUBBER, ALTO FRICTION PACK, ALTO STEEL PACK, ALTO HEAVY DUTY COMMERCIAL 3/4 FRICTION PACK TO ADD EXTRA FRICTIONS AND STEELS TO THE 3/4 DRUM. YOU ALSO GET BORG WARNER HIGH ENERGY BAND, CORVETTE SERVO, .500 BOOST VALVE AND A NEW FILTER. THIS HAS BEEN OUR MOST POPULAR KIT AND NOW WE HAVE ADDED THE BEAST!!!!!

or:
This transmission rebuild kit includes Alto Friction Plates, 3-4 PowerPack, Steel Plates, Sealing Rings, Metal Clad Seals, Gaskets, Orings, Filter, Band, Front Pump Bushing and Extention Housing Bushing. This pack comes with the Alto PowerPack for the 3-4. This PowerPack has additional clutches to increase friction plate capacity. This allows for an increased torque load with reduced heat generation.

or what would you guys suggest? i have found other kits to but that is a starting point. let me know. and would i NEED any special tools?

Re: 700r4(4l60) need help

If you want a thou kit I would go with http://www.700r4l60e.com/ Dana at Probuilt Automatics has one of the most complete kits I have ever seen. His web page gives a breakdown of all the parts. I have seen a lot of kits from BM, Summit, and a lot of other places as well and none are as complete as his are. If you are worried about time you can get one built, dynoed tested and sent to you as well with no core charge and shipping is pretty cheap about 100 dollars anywhere in the US.
It is up to you it is your money but you had stated that you were building the engine up might as well get the trans done and be finished with that part. As far as doing the trans yourself in two days and back in. That would depend on your skill level. The biggest issure is a spring compressor and some kind of parts washer to get everything very clean. Depending on which kit you get will have to press the stator support shaft out and press a cryoed sleeve onto the input drum.
I hope that this helps on your decision.

Re: 700r4(4l60) need help

It sounds like the forward clutch is spent and possible the 2-4 band and drum.

Don't buy any kit with Alto clutches. Get a borg warner kit from Dana or the complete kit from makco.com for $160. Might as well add a beast shell while you are in there. New torque converter too.

tools:
ATSG manual
spring compressor (make it or buy it)
pump remover tool (make it or buy it)
trans gel lube/grease
zip ties and plastic bottle to install seals (unless you buy the cut seals like Dana sells)
feeler gauges
lip seal install tool (buy it or make it)

I would plan a lot longer than 2 days for your first rebuild. It sounds like the reverse drum might be junk so you may want to order a new one of those too.

If the engine is much more than stock I would upgrade the 3-4 clutch, shift kit, etc.
