Attention all 9 Bolt experts...

Recently did a cone repair on my 9 bolt. the cones had bottomed in the carrier so I machined the cone faces and the carrier inside to get more life out of it. I shimmed it what I thought was a little loose as I did not have enough shims to make it any tighter. It had about 80k and the bearings looked good etc so I left them all.

Put it all back together with std gear oil that said no additive needed....took it for a drive and it seemed very tight almost like a spool. Turning tight corners resulted in tire squeal and or hopping depending on the speed.

Drove it like that for about 30 miles, took the cover off and the oil seemed to have some metal particles stuck to the magnet I had added to inside of the case.

Changed fluid to Lucas rear end 75/145 and I added 2 tubes of gm limited slip additive.

Drove the car and mad some tight turns forward and backward and I started to get some load popping like the cones were breaking free and jerking..

Put about 100 miles on the car and now I can make all tight turns forward and backward with no popping and only slight jerking at slow speed (walking) any faster and the inside tire will squeal as the cone locks.

So my question is should I keep driving the car since I see a large improvement and could the additive really make that much difference? Also is it possible that if you don't shim the cones so all play is removed that you could have a rear that would be really tight like this? I made sure I did not have any preload on the spyder gears and so was really surprised when it was so tight..

Please impart and and all knowledge - this was my first rear end work but been wrenching on cars for 25 years..

thanks all!

The additive is for organic clutches; doesn't do diddly for the 9-bolt.

It should loosen up some as the fresh machined surfaces on the cones get worn down a bit.

Sounds like the cones are seated now so I would just leave it alone. I had to reshim mine a few times to get it right, think you need a little bit of play so you don't end up with a really tight rear.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep driving it for now and maybe after a few hundred more miles open it up and see if anything bad is happening. The magnet I added should grab all the metal shavings and keep them out of the bearings..
