howling?

i just picked up a 87 Z28 with a t5. the car drives great except around 55mph the rear starts to howl and it doesn't get quiet until about 75mph. is my rear about to go bye bye? i'll check the fluid tomorrow when i change the oil in it, but any input is helpful!

Re: howling?

The carrier bearings are shot you need to look for a complete assembly, your housing is likely warped from a P/O running it low on fluid.

Re: howling?

mine was howling on deceleration, maybe on acceleration but my exhaust is too loud to hear it. next thing you know the rear end locked up because the pinion nut had backed loose and the pinion smacked the carrier. take the driveshaft off real quick and check how tight that bolt is on the rear.
