12 bolt axle install?

I got my Moser 12 bolt rear today. The axles are in a separate box. I'm just curious is it a pain in the butt to install them? I haven't had time to even really open the box yet. Just curious...

I helped a friend put a Moser 9" into an '86 TA and another to put a Moser 12-bolt into a '98 Z28. Neither were particularly difficult as long as you take your time and pay attention to what you are doing. Putting the 12-bolt into the 4thgen is not really at all different than putting it into a 3rdgen.

It can be a PITA just because of the size and weight of it if you're doing it alone, but its still more than doable.

Re: 12 bolt axle install?

I thought since the rear said "complete" it would come with the axles installed in it already.

Re: 12 bolt axle install?

The axles are not installed because the brakes must go on before the axles go in. Moser always ships the rear end with the axles seperate. It's no problem to install the axles. If they are c clip axles then you remove the cover, remove the bolt that holds the cross shaft in place, remove the shaft, push the axles in, put the c clips on, pull out on the axles, put the shaft back in, put thee retaining bolt back in, torque the bolt to 25 foot pounds, install the cover and it's done. If they are not c clip axles then you just slide the axles in and install the 4 bolts that hold them in place.

Re: 12 bolt axle install?

Well I have no grooves on my axles, so I'm guess they're not C clip axles.

Re: 12 bolt axle install?

Are the bearings pressed on the axles or are they inside the housing ends? If they press on the axles then you don't have c clips. If you are using disc brakes then you might need to install the caliper brackets before pressing the bearings on the axles. If you are using drum brakes then you might need to modify the backing plates, depending on which brakes you are using.

Axles using 9" housing ends require bearings pressed onto the axles, but its not done at the factory, as some brake brackets must be put on the axle before the bearing is pressed on. Found this out on that 9" I spoke of in my first post... he had the bearings pressed on, then had to have them pulled off again to put on that caliper bracket first.

Re: 12 bolt axle install?

Thanks again guys! You're helping me a ton. A few more more questions, what exactly is this and where does it go?

Unless I'm missing something in the box, the directions I got are pretty poor. Also, what part of the Brakes have have to go on before the axles are installed? Just the caliper brackets? Also, yes, the bearings are pressed on the axles (Do they go all the way in until they bottom out?). I'm starting to get pissed at the lack of instructions that came with this. That or either I'm a complete newb that sucks, lol.

By the way big gear head, by the time I read your PM it was too late, I already ordered. Sorry

Re: 12 bolt axle install?

That is the retainer ring for the bearing. It goes on after the bearing is pressed on. It help hold the bearing in place. I wish you had ordered this from me. I could have gone over all of this before you ordered it so that you would know what needed to be done. If the bearings are already pressed on the axles then they will have to come off to get the caliper brackets on. The caliper brackets might need to be modified to work with these bearings. I don't know which brackets you have and I don't know which housing ends you have, so I don't know what you need to do to make it fit.

Re: 12 bolt axle install?

Thanks again! Yes, my caliper brackets have to be modified. I at least understand that part. I guess it's time to get my hands dirty! These are the instructions I got for the bracket: http://www.moserengineering.com/mose...maroBrakes.pdf

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

For the love of god I cannot get it to go down all the way. The bearing pressed on ok. But the retainer ring just won't move anymore. Do you think I should heat it maybe then press it on?

Re: 12 bolt axle install?

If you heat it you will destroy it. These are designed to be a tight fit. What kind of a press are you using to install it?

A very small one. I think it's better I take it to the shop. The bearings went in fine though. Thanks again for the reply! Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. I still feel bad. I just should have got one from you.
