Torque Converter question and rearend swap question

1. lately i've been having shifting problems in my 700r4 ('84) it seems like it overrevs before shifting. i was wondering f the torque converter could have a play in this? my trans oil is fine and i adjusted the TV cable.

2. eventually/soonish i will be swapping out my 84 drum rear for an 87 disc rear. i've read a lot and i know that i will need to change the proportioning valve. what i wanna know is, should i just buy a porportioning valve for an 87 and will i be set?

Re: Torque Converter question and rearend swap question

Overrevs as in it shifts too late, or as in the RPMs spike before dropping on an upshift?

Re: Torque Converter question and rearend swap question

it shifts too late.
idk how to describe it here but i'll try with numbers

1= low sound/rpms

and lets say 5 is when it would shift for a normal trans

it used to go 1,2,3,4,5 very firm.

now it will go 1,2,3,4,5,6,7shift

The problem is that the 84 will likely have the old-style combination valve which has SAE threads while the 87 will be metric (the line route is different as well). Post #1 and #2 in the following link will show you the two types:

Should yours look like the valve in pic #2, then the 87 will bolt up.
