Need help with my 700.

Well fellas i raced a 89 5.0 gaystang tonight and had a tranny failure. I threw it down into 1 and it wouldnt shift at all into 2 and it normally does as soon at it yellow lines but not now it didnt even shift after i let up. Also when im gettin onto the freeway it seems like it wont shift from 2-3 unless i let up on the throttle it will just continue redlining the revs until i let up then it shifts is this normal?what should i do?

make sure the tv cable didn't slip but you may have smoked the band. i would pull the pan and look for debris.

Re: Need help with my 700.

Define this smoking of the band you speak of? Also when im cruising at about 40 and go WOT its like it downshift and the revs go up but it like jumps to 4000 and hangs for a second then the tranny kinda jumps in gear then outta gear and back into gear i assume that isnt normal

Re: Need help with my 700.

the band is a brake inside the tranny that operates 2 & 4. sounds like the band is no longer holding the drum. if you remove the transmission oil pan you may be able to see pieces of the band's friction material settled in the bottom.(will need entire rebuild)

Does that sound like something that would go out at 150000 miles?

Yes, mine went out at 70,000miles, and there's another thread that I read tonight where another member's tranny(700R4) broke on him around 74,000miles.

Re: Need help with my 700.

Is it cheaper to rebuild it or buy a tranny from like autozone?

Re: Need help with my 700.

i would find a good shop in your area to rebuild yours. that way they can "beef it up". do a lot of homework to find a good shop, especially for a bench rebuild. a lot of shops wont do it unless they install it.
