Tranny is broke......i think.
Ok, so i have a 350 with a manual tranny on it. The engine runs fine, and i don't hear anything wrong with it. The tranny on the other hand has a major problem. I start the engine and push the clutch to put the tranny into gear, but when i let off of the clutch, nothing happens. None of the gears work, and i don't hear any real noises coming from the tranny. I don't know what exactly happened to make it do this, but i do know that it did it really quickly....like from one gear shift to the next. I still have pressure on the clutch pedal, and it moves the slave cylinder, but i can't seem to figure out what could be the problem. I'd like to get some advice before i try and drop the tranny. Anny help would be greatly appreciated.

T5 ?
Will the car move (on a hill or being pushed) with the motor off, trans in gear, and clutch released? Sounds like the friction surface of the clutch disk has separated from the hub.
The inputshaft can sometimes shear all the teeth during power launches, but that makes a horrible noise and doesn't sound like what you were doing at the time it failed.

Yes, the car does move when in gear, and the engine is off. How hard is it for the friction surface to break off of the hub? The friction plate is just the generic one from advanced auto. so it's not anything fancy.

It's not common, but also not unheard of.. If it's a stock replacement disc, you're already over powering it with the 350 motor, and anything's possible.

If that friction disk did break though, wouldn't i still have some sort of driveablity?

I like that last answer a whole lot better than the others.....but how hard is it to do that with the throw out bearing? I mean it took a lot to get it in there.

Re: Tranny is broke......i think.
sad part is, i've got extra throw out bearings, and the pressure plate, and friction plate have less than a thousand miles on them. so again, i don't think it's them, but it would be better to only have to replace those, than to have to replace the whole tranny.

Re: Tranny is broke......i think.
Exactly If it was the tranny you would know it would. by it not getting in gear. hearing grinding noises. It could have less than 100 miles on them I always change them no matter what. Because taking the time to take it all apart is just frustrating when it does go out and have to crawl under there and do it anyways. I had this happen not on a camaro but I power launched my 94 topaz. And it actually pushed the throw out bearing in the pressure plate and fell off. And reason i say its sounds like the same is after i did that i drove it and thought transmission was slipping. just driving normal. And then it completely just wouldn't move and in all gears the car felt like it was in neutral. But this is what the problem was. Another note. Might want to get flywheel surfaced as well. b/c a bad scorched one will eat a clutch in no time as well. And if it was the clutch gone it would still be stuck in a gear or stuck in neutral.

Regardless, until the transmission is dropped, it's all just guessing..

It sure sounds like a clutch problem, no connection between the engine and transmission. Isn't there an inspection cover on the bottom of the bell housing on these cars. If there is drop the cover and you will probably see whats left of your clutch disc falling out!

Re: Tranny is broke......i think.
There is a cover, but all you can see is the back of the flywheel. So it doesn't really help all that much.
