Shifting problem

I just swapped a 700r4 from an 86 into an 87. The 87's trans did not work, and the 86 was a junker so I swapped them. But now the 86's trans has the same problem. So I don't think it was the trans in the first place. It doesnt want to shift out of first gear, and if it does its really hard.

I have adjusted the tv detent cable. But it is still not working. The older trans's used to use a vacuum from the engine to know when to shift. But now there is an electrical connection to tell it when to shift.

I was hoping you guys could tell me what the sensor is that makes the trans shift now because that vacuum is gone. And if so where is it and how do I replace it.

Re: Shifting problem

To my knowledge a 700R4 doesnt shift by vacumn or electrical connection. The electrical connection is for the lockup to engage in OD. 700R4 will shift on its own. I know if the TV cable is off just a hair it will mess up which is the problem Im having my rebuilt tranny. Anybody else want to chime in on this???

Re: Shifting problem

Sounds like the governer is sticking to me, or a throttle valve issue. Both common, i'd check the governer 1st. F.Y.I. no 700r or 4l60 has a vac. line on it. these trans are hydra operated and the electronics have nothing to do w/ the shifts or shift points. on these units the only plugs go to lock up(ALL) and some a pressure and or temp switch and on some an electric speedo. FOR A SHIFT you want governer press to OVERCOME throttle pressure. Hope this helps GOOD LUCK!!!

Re: Shifting problem

That might be the problem I'm having, but the governor gear was replaced, and the valve was cleaned, and my tv cable is frickin' tight at WOT.

I'm irritated, too, so don't feel alone.

Re: Shifting problem

If your tv cable is tight at wot you need a new tv cable it seems its got a kink in it. Bad news. Tv cable does the shifting for the transmission. Adjust your tv cable if it doesn't adjust. You will need a new one. DO not be driving it like that it will Kill your transmission quick.

Re: Shifting problem

Here is a link on the tv cable.
http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php.

In shortness of it on there is a tab on the tv cable you press it and then slide the rachet stick that is connected to the wire to the throttle. You push all the way in as far as it goes. Then jump in the car and slowly depress. Car being off. Press the accelerator all the way to the floor. Then its adjusted if this doesn't work the tv cable is needed of replacement. Or Another way is instead of pressing it with the pedal just wot on the throttle with you hand and it will adjust just a minder though. Make sure your pedal makes the throttle wot to or it won't correctly adjust with the pedal. In turn you will have late shifting which will come in hard shifts. Or early shifting and make it slip. range of 2nd shift should be around 14mph, then 3rd shift about 30 mph. go slow accelerating to see if it shifts close to the mph on the speedo if the speedo is correct.
