Drive Shaft Vibration-My (Long) Story

With a 3.73:1 axle ratio and stock steel drive shaft (which had been "foamed" by the local Chevy dealer in an effort to reduce drive-train noises...another story for another time), vibration was setting in about 75 mph. I had installed an Energy Suspension trans mount, so first I removed the pre-load plate and things improved. But, still had a buzz that would sometimes get nearly violent, like, get on the brakes right now before something lets go. Installed a used 1LE aluminum drive shaft, still had the same problem; the car would pull to 130 mph but I had to close one eye to keep from seeing double. Took the car to the local drive-line specialist, "Yarman Drive Shafts" in Lancaster, CA. Mike balanced the shaft, with the pinion yoke, and 99% of the vibes are gone (should have done this before installing a used shaft...) I don't know if balancing w/ the yoke is common or not, but it worked very well on my car. I hope this can help others with the cursed vibration probs. (Still may contact Denny's for a new shaft to handle the additional power, but if you're not ready to step up to a new aftermarket shaft, maybe this will help you.)

I've been having vibration issues at about the same 70-80mph speed and will have to try this out! Thanks burnout

I have a vibration too, after about 50mph and up. I'm gonna change the u-joints and if that don't help I'm gonna have it balanced like you did.

Re: Drive Shaft Vibration-My (Long) Story

I had a vibration when I swapped from 2.73 to 3.42s. I picked up an aluminum ds from a 02 trans am and that solved my problem.
