Zoom 30009 - Zoom High Performance Clutch Kits
Hi im new to Thirdgen forums! but happy to be here i have a 1985 Pontiac Trans am Stock 305 H.O. mated to a 5 speed tranny my clutch is starting to slip and im looking for a nice clutch i have one picked out wouldnt mind getting some opinions on it!

Zoom really isn't that great of a clutch if you drive pretty aggressively. You'd be much better served by going with either a Ram Powergrip or a Centerforce Dual Friction. Either of those 2 clutches will take a lot of abuse without slipping. They're about $100-$150 more than the Zoom, but you get what you pay for.

im using zooms race clutch, with the kevlar faces. I've beaten the hell out of it and no slipping at all, i think its pretty good. I would recommend it. The pedal feel is very nice too.

I'm using the Kevlar clutch as well. Only have 700 miles on it but it holds up to my motor.

I've heard both good and bad feedback when it comes to the Zoom clutches. Of course, just like anything else, how well you know how to use a clutch plays a huge factor in how long it's gonna last. Kevlar faced clutches hold up well as long as you engage it quick without slipping it a lot. They glaze up pretty quick if you let up slow on the pedal and slip it a lot. The Ram I'm using employs a sintered iron material on the pressure plate side and organic on the flywheel side. The sintered iron material is quite aggressive and the hotter it gets, the better it grips. My first Ram clutch used sintered iron on both sides. I think they went with organic on the flywheel side on the newer units to cut down on wear on the flywheel surface. I'm running a billet flywheel, and I had to get it resurfaced before running the new clutch because the sintered iron had cut a pretty decent groove into the surface of the flywheel. They recommend not using the sintered iron material on the flywheel side at all if you're running a factory, cast flywheel, and I can see why after seeing what it did to an aftermarket, billet flywheel. With the newer design, it's nice having the organic on the one side since it's easier on the flywheel surface and also cuts down on chattering when engaging the clutch.

Yeah the zoom clutch kevlar thing is what i was wondering about it says it wont scare up your flywheel so i might try it =)

Just make sure to get your flywheel resurfaced before installing it. They void the warranty if you don't resurface it. Besides, it gives the kevlar a new, perfect surface to wear into. Kevlar doesn't scar up the surface as bad as organic because it's a lot more resistant to heat, so that's definitely one of the benefits to it.

The kevlar clutch does have a longer break in period, to properly burnish the clutch. I dont slip the clutch much at all, usually the only time it happens is when i just start off in 1st. After that i let the clutch up real fast, almost a dump and it engages with little drama and goes. Even at high rpm, the engagement is smooth but quite positive. I only have something like 4000 miles on it, but since the car is a toy/weekend warrior, thats 4000 hard miles.
I have heard that the stock replacement and slightly upgraded zoom clutches blow big time.

Yeah well i dont know what is even in the car at the moment but the strange thing is it slips when im in to it past 2nd gear 1st and 2nd grab good 3rd 4th and 5th its like nothing is there and the pedal starts grabbing half way out which is strange from what i hear i was told maybe the pressure plate is worn out or something maybe somebody put a new clutch Disk instead of the whole kit i dont know though.
