700R4 Guru wanted

Hey guys, heres the deal. I recently built a vortec 350 and put a 700 behind it. The tranny was built by a licensed builder that I know and he put all new bands and clutch's and also put in a shift kit, not sure the make of it tho. here is the problem that I have. I adjsuted the TV cable so that there was no slack in the wire and went for a drive. the car went good and shifted hard, but it only shifted at 4500. I thought nothing of it, I went for another drive and this time it shifted at 5200-5500, then the next time 4500 again. I noticed that it shifts at a higher rpm if the pedal is not all the way at the floor (so 90% throttle) so what I did is I adjusted the TV cable so there was more slack and now it shifts at a higher rpm. Correct me if i am worng but isnt that suppose to be the opposite, the tigheter it is the higher the shift and looser the lower the shift?
Also by adjusting the cable, it only affects the 1-2 shift the 2-3 is still the same and shifts at 4500.
Is there anyone that could possible shed some light on this issue?
Thanks in advance

Re: 700R4 Guru wanted

cable length plays a big factor. is it a factory original cable for the car? There is a couple different types of cables. some are self adjusting, and others you manually set. what type do you have? Also was the original governor retained during the overhaul as it may be for a four wheel drive and will throw shift points off?
hollar back.

Re: 700R4 Guru wanted

Hey, the cable is original to the car and I think it is the manual type. there is a button of sorts on the side with teethon the other, so when you bottom it out and open the throttle it skips until the cable is tight. the gov was never chagned and is the same, the only thing that was cahnged were the clutches and the valve body. Now with that being said, why would it shift at a higher rpm at 90% than at 100% throttle? that is the only thing that does not make sense to me. Also, it does not kick down for the life of the thing. I can be doing 70Km/h in OD and it wont kick down to 2 it goes to D and bogs. it almost sounds like the valve body is messed up but not sure

Re: 700R4 Guru wanted

hopefully you don't have a problem in the VB. Are you sure you just don't have RPM gauge issue??? it's common. The stock govy shifts at 4500.

was this built as a slap stick??
whats the fuild level like and color?
what kinda shift kit is it?
ed o has a point was the old govy retained
what year?
make sure the cable is not gummed up too
what does it do when you manual shift it?

try this again, With the car off push the botton on the TV cable, at the same the push the front of the cable back into the housing so the teeth are not showing. let the button go, @Throttle Body open it to WOT you'll here it clicking into place again. Jump in the car test drive again come back and post your findings.

Thnaks for the reply, I was away this weekend and did not get a chance to get on the net. the answers to your questions are:
it does not have a manual vb
fluid level and colour are good(nice bright red)
I dont know the name of the shift kit but I will try to get it
the tranny is out of a 87 camaro
the cable is good and moves freely
when i manual shift, say i hold it in first and bump it up to second, at 4500 it feels like it hit a brick wall, then keeps pulling, but it has a hesitation before it wants to do anything, once I shift it shifts fine

The way that you described above to adjust the tv cable is exactly how i did it when i installed it.

Now you said before that the stock gov is 4500, is it really? Not saying that you are wrong, I just cant beleive that it is that low

Re: 700R4 Guru wanted

yeah bro i the stock govy shifts about 4500-4800 if left in OD to shift on its own, since are cars don't pull much pass that RPM. See if you can get more info about the kit and what was really done.
