a couple 700r4 questions

im trying to find out how to open up overdrive so it will shift at WOT. without having to get a TH350. I heard from a friend who said that hooking up a switch to the lockup solenoid(dont remember if thats what he said) would allow this, but i would like to know what else can be done. and also, the risks with doing this? over heating, burning clutch packs, etc. also is there an easier way to put a new TV cable without having to drop the tranny?? alot of questions but im sure this is the right place to be, lol.

You can install anew TV cable without dropping the trans completely. Unbolt the x-member and stick a jack under it and lower it down. The install can be done on the outside of the case, just don't let the little arm fall back inside once you've disconnected the old cable.

Nothing electrical will allow a full throttle 4th gear upshift. This is built into the valvebody of the trans. You need a new sleeve that will allow a full throttle 4th gear upshift. Check that link above.

ok, thanks guys, now what about the risks for opening up 4th? definately an aftermarket trans cooler? overheating may be a problem. also the 2-3 clutch pack is slipping i guess, cause at WOT sometimes it shifts, sometimes it doesnt. any input?

I'd recommend a transmission cooler on even a stock daily driven non raced car in Florida. I like the Long Tru-Cool LPD coolers. They have a bypass for when it's too cold and they're the stacked plate design which tends to be better than the tube and fin design.

I went with their 11x12" model. Rated for full size cars, heavy duty towing, campers, motor homes etc. Since you're in Florida, I'd bypass the radiator.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell you about your 2-3 issue though.

yeah, i was guessing the 2-3 issue was the clutch pack, cause i have read a couple forums on here about it. guess i will wait to see if anyone has any other input.

what about good motors that match up to a 700r4, that the trans can handle?

You can install "two" Allen plugs in your TV plunger bushing in the 4-3 part throttle downshift holes for about $.34. You will need a dremel to grind them to clear the valve body bore. This will give you a WOT 3-4 shift. and prevent high speed 4-3 downshift at WOT. The instructions that I use for this were posted on this website awhile back, maybe someone can find them. I will try to post them up soon, when I have a little time.

pro- what about the throttle valve plunger and sleeve kit? any good? im inexperienced with transmissions, i know a bit about motors so i would be a little more comfortable buying the part. cause i dont have the money to get another trans at this point. whats your opinion? the throttle valve plunger an sleeve, or the allen plugs?

Either way the TV plunger sleeve has to come out, so why not save $20-30.00, and install the Allen plugs. It does the same thing.

i guess my next question would be, which would be eaiser? and post the instructions if you can find them, lol. cause like i said, i have no tranny experience and would be a little squeamish about modding a transmission like that, guess im a little too afraid to mess something up.

It's easy to do. You just tap the holes and run the allen plugs in and then grind the heads down flush with the sleeve. I'd do that rather than spend money here that could be spent doing other things to make your car faster or more fun to drive.

The biggest V8 you can afford! A 350-383 is a great combo with a 700R4, as they will help overcome the one bad area of the 700R4, which is the wide spread between 1st and 2nd gear. Using a motor like a 350 or a 383 that has a nice broad torque curve will make this much less noticable. That being said I had one behind the original 305 in my Blazer and it performed fine. The gear spread wasn't that noticable. I had a good exhaust, long tube headers, and a few other mods to the 305. I run that little motor like a dog for two years and never hurt it. In the end I still got $200 for it when I sold it. I replaced it just because I wanted more power, which the 350 delivered, and then broke half the drivetrain one part at a time. Now the drivetrain is up to the task and hopefully will last behind the current 383.
