700R4 "pops" out in 1st gear.....

I have a 700R4 trans out of an '85 TPI Z28 in my '84 Berlinetta that saw a few successful runs down the track when the motor was brand new last summer, however, the trans recently has experienced a strange problem during hard acceleration in 1st gear. If I acelerate a bit on the heavy side in 1st gear, the trans feels like it "pops" (it actually is more like a "BANG") out of gear. The engine hits the rev limiter & after I let off of the gas & the engine RPM drops back down it "BANGS" back in gear & I go on my way. This has never happened in any other gear - lately I've been waiting until it hits 2nd to give it WOT - or during grandma style driving. Any ideas on the cause? Think it may be repaired (or worth while even trying) without doing a complete rebuild? Would this have any relation to the fact that I did one run down the strip with the TV cable disconnected? - Willie tried to advise me against doing it, but I just "had" to give it a try.....

Check the fluid level? If low you will pick up air on hard acceleration and this could possibly cause this. If the level looks correct try adding about 3/4 of a quart of fluid and see what happens, if this were to correct this make a new full mark on the dipstick. The fluid must be in good condition to begin with, otherwise you could be having other causes for this problem. If you have any questions concerning this call me at 800 7763288 Mon-Sat 10-6 PST.
Glad Too Help!!!

Dana, thanks for the advise (again) - I'll give it a try. When this one gives up, I'll be placing an order........Willie's trans, which you built, continues to work great.

The fluid level was OK, so adding 1/2 qt of fluid (the trans has Valvoline Durablend Synthetic ATF / Dexron 3 in it), put the fluid level at the base of where the dip stick curves in an "S" shape & it still gives the appearance of something breaking, as the transmission "bangs" out of gear, if I floor it, in 1st gear.

I have recently had this same problem although I suspected that it was actually the rear that was slipping. I could be wrong but it seemed like the rear was not catching. If I were you I would check the fluid level there too. I have a ford 9 inch in my car and checked it the fluid level was way low, I must have a leak somewhere. I replaced the fluid, although I fear I may have damaged some things back there. While I was at it I also checked the tranny fluid it was about a quart low so I put that it too. The problem seems to be gone, although I haven't been driving the car much right now to know for sure. I have a question too for anyone replying to this. What things can break in the back of a Ford 9. I have a detroit locker. The car has a lot of gear whine, but always did and I think it was just set up wrong. The car had these slipping problems like above, but even after the fluid refill I notice the smell of gear oil burning when I stop after a hard run. There are a couple of leaks and they could just be burning on the wheels or something, but am not sure what the problem really is. Is it possible to break one of these lockers. I would really appreciate some help before I have to take it to the shop and spend hundreds for something that might or might not be so serious. Thanks.
