AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
i was sanding away and getting rid of the old crappy paint the last owner had on it. anyways. as i was sanding i found a crack under the old paint.
the tranny is a TH350. here is a snap shot i took of it
i drew on it with a marker so you can see the crack more clearly.
this tranny is going to be put on a 400+hp engine and i dont want to put it behind the engine with a crack.
would it be ok to put it behind the engine? or would i be better off getting a new stronger bell housing? i found one for $230

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
i wouldn't risk it. if you can find a 4x4 case they are a little stronger in the bell housing area. you tell a 4x4 case by having 3 bolt holes on each side of the bell where the torque converter inspection cover bolts to as opposed to the 4 machine screws for a 2wd case.

The Ultra Bell is more than you need. It's SFI certified but you might be able to find a used one that has an expired SFI date.

You can also take the tranny to a welder and have the crack welded up.

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
That crack is TOTALLY insignificant.
Drill about a 1/8" hole at the end of it to keep it from growing. Run it. Like Stephen said, if it REALLY bothers you, get it welded, too. But if it was mine, I wouldn't bother.
You might be AMAZED to see how many trans cases there are in the world cracked like that, running around doing just fine.

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
i thought about getting it welded back up. i wasnt sure if it would work or not.
ill drill a whole at the end to stop it from getting anyworse.
ill take it to a welder to get it quickly done. just to make me happy haha.
i was looking at the ultra bellhousing. how do they fit on?
my tranny is one big case. do i have to cut off the bellhousing area and bolt up the new one or how does it work?

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
To use an Ultra Bell, you cut off the old bellhousing right behind the pump. The Ultra Bell is bolted onto the transmission by the pump bolts.
The nice thing about an Ultra Bell is that they also make adapter bellhousings. This allows different makes of engines to use different makes of transmissions. Dodge and Ford like to use a powerglide also.

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
ohh ok. i think i might place a bid on the housing and see what happens.
but as for now, i totally forgot i recently bought a welder. im just reading the manual book to see if it can weld aluminum.
welder is a fluxcore wirefeed Lincoln welder. its one of the Weld-Pak HD welders. plugs into the household outlets. i believe they are 115 or 110volt?

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
Have it done with a proper 220V welder. Aluminum welding needs a spool gun for the wire. It can't be pushed through the cable. You also need 100% Argon gas. It takes practice to aluminum weld. Without experience, your weld won't stick or you'll blow a hole through the metal.

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
haha im acturally quite proud of that haha. i think its a good song for the background haha i was abit upset. but since i did some reading im not to worryed about it. ill just get it welded up and call it good.
if it breaks. then ill get a Ultra bellhousing if ebay. they seem to be very good deal.
Love hurts, love scars,
Love wounds, and marks,
Any heart, not tough,
Or strong, enough
To take a lot of pain,
Take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain
Love hurts, ooh ooh love hurts
oh if anyone ask what song it is.
its Love Hurts by Nazareth hehe
good song. i love it

i would love to weld it myself but i dont have the proper welder and my skills right now are weak. im in the practicing and know how to weld at the moment.
ill take it in and get it quickly welded up.
oh by the way. on the top of the bellhousing it says
C x l
what is that? you can kinda see it in the video and on the photo

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
hmm. who knows.
i jsut found out one of my buddy knows how to weld. so im hoping to take it to his shop. well the shop he works at and see if i can get a deal if he can weld it up for me.
i just gotta ask if he can do it for me.
i think my credit card got lost in the mail or something. its been at least 3 to 4 weeks know when they said i got aproved for one and that the card will be on its way. i wanna order that book for the tranny.
oh quick question or sugestion..
would it be worth it for me to get the crack welded up orrr go and see if i can get a Ultra bellhousing for it insted?
and as i pulled the tail piece end. i found out 2 of the screw holes are stripped! i seem to be finding more and more things on this tranny.
i guess you get what you paid for.
when i bought it. it came with a Tq converter. is there anyway to tell what type it is?
ill post a photo of it when i get the camera working again.

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
Type of converter? No. I can show you 2 brand name converters and you won't know what they are.
From the sounds of it, you should find another transmission. There's only about a million TH350 around to pick from.
I wouldn't bother getting an Ultra Bell. You're not in the power levels where you need the extra expense even if you don't need a current SFI tag on it.

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
yeah im kind of kicking myself in the butt right now. i just read some drag stuff and for what im going to be doing in the future. i wish i got the TH400. but i havnt seen one for sale thats cheap enough.
i probably could semi fix this tranny up. paint it and clean it up.
and sell it for more then i paid for if thats allowable.
i paid $125 for the tranmission and came with the tq converter and oil cooler.
they wanted $200 but i got him to go down to 125. i thought that was pretty good which is why i got it.
i was thinking of going to the auto wreckers on saturday to see what they got. since im there. im going to see if have any TH400s. which cars should i be looking for? and what would be a decent price range?
i was going to spend about a grand or 2 into the TH350. but a grand in a 400 probably be the better choice. the engine im building hopfully put me in the 600hp range. thats with nitrous. but that wont be for sometime tho.
and im sure the 350 wont last as long as well at the 400 would.
See, grr. kickin my self.

Re: AHHH! Cracked Bellhousing!
its a long tailshaft.
i was reading up some info on it and they said they made a th350c version.
and you can tell by the input shaft. i think that what you call it. anyways i whent and checked and i have the "performence type" th350 since its not the 350c version.
why do you ask?
