700R4 Question.
I will start at the beginning, when i bought my T/A GTA it slipped going from 1st to 2nd so i decided to buy a rebuild kit thinking it was clutches, part way through rebuild i read fault finding part of atsg manual which stated that it could be a weak accumulator spring, when i checked mine it was broken into 3 bits so i bought a new one.I put trans back in car and at first all gears changed fine but i had no kickdown and would not shift down with shifter lever and then it started only going into first and then second if i put my foot down but went straight back to first when i took my foot off accelerator.I read the manual again and it gave a probable cause of burnt out band so i pulled and stripped trans only to find the new band i fitted burnt out,the manual gave cause as servo and when i checked servo the clip that holds second apply piston and servo cushion spring retainer together was missing so i took it that that is what caused problem.
I have now rebuilt trans again fitting a new reverse input drum and kevlar band, later piston and belleville plate,a .500 valve and replaced the servo but servo is different than original, think it may be corvette, some of parts are bigger like the 2nd apply piston.I drove car today but i now only get first and second gear and reverse, can anyone tell me what the problem is,manual lists a few different things but i am not sure which to check first.Should i replace servo with original as it states this can be done without removing trans. Also manual states that on the 3-4 accumulator the piston goes in and then spring but when i dissassembled my trans they were the opposite way around, should i put the spring in first and then piston?I should mention that the trans is from a early '87 car.
Sorry if this is a bit long but i just wanted to try and explain everything i have done to it.Thanks in advance for any help.
P.S. I have also fitted a new torque convertor.

Re: 700R4 Question.
I tried changing pistons and springs round and checked servo but it still will not go into 3 or 4,can the kickdown cable cause it not to go into those gears if it is not adjusted correctly, just thought i would ask as i have a aftermarket universal chrome braided cable so i cannot tell if it is adjusted correctly or not.
I should mention that it only changes from first to second when lever is at 2 and gear change is smooth with no slipping, when i put it in D or OD it drives with no slippage but only stays in first gear.

Re: 700R4 Question.
Has to go into 3rd B4 4th. They use the same 3-4 clutch pack and the band re-applies to the drum to go into 4th. So, I would narrow it down to the circuit that feeds the 3rd clutch pack engaement. (3-4)Most accumilator setups are Piston up in the Case side with tangs down, then the Spring. Seperator Plate in between. Then (1-2) accumilator setup is Spring up against the Sep Plate and the Piston down in the removed Housing with the tangs facing the Spring (upwards). 1993 Models dont use a 3-4 Spring, just a piston and the 93 1-2 Accumilator is reversed as described above. Ill look at my manuals for some more info I may be able to pass on, but that should get you started.

Re: 700R4 Question.
None of the accumulator spring servo positions will cause a no upshift to 3rd or 4th. You may have a TV cable issue but even with that if the speed gets high enough it should make the shift to 3rd, If it just staying in 2nd and not neutraling where the 2-3 shift should occurr I would say you have a stickig valve body or govenor. If you are neutraling where the 2-3 shift should occur you have and internal assembly issue and need to try again ,

Re: 700R4 Question.
It dose not neutral in any gear,i have ordered a few more bits, valve body gaskets and new plate and a new governor but as i am in england and parts or coming from states it will probably get 1-2 weeks before they get here then i will pull valve body off and give it a check over make sure nothing is sticking and put new governor and vb plate on and then try again,i will post back to let you know how i get on,thanks for your help.

Re: 700R4 Question.
I have cleaned and checked the valve body and fitted new vb plate and gaskets, fitted a new governor but still no joy,in fact it will not change up from 1st to 2nd now.I am wondering if it could be due to wrong gap size between clutches and pressure plates as i know gap was too large at time i was doing them but left it as gap was same as the ones i had taken out,but i did not know at time it was possible to buy thicker pressure plates.I have to decide now wether or not to pull trans out and strip it and start again or just leave car parked for a bit longer until i can afford a second hand trans as they are pretty expensive and hard to come by here in England.
Thanks for all advice given so far.
