no third in downshift

ok i searched but couldnt find anything...84 z28 with 350 in it...and 5 speed manual...ok so when i shift into 4th and try to downshift into 3rd i cant its like something is blocking the gear i have to hold the clutch in swing to 2nd then go to third...its really annoying i was told on here that it was my shifter so i just installed my new pro 5.0 shifter today and still have the same problem...i just want to know what the problem is and how big of a job its ganna be to fix...i know its not the shifter now so its got to be the trans...and i think its not the stock trans either if i rememeber right its a borg warner 5 speed...but i could be wrong on that...

Re: no third in downshift

I just posted a reply to this on 5-0blackbird's thread, but if it is a bad synchro you should still be able to double clutch to get on downshifts and get into gear. basically just take it out of gear, while in neutral let up the clutch and rev the engine to the approx engine speed it will be going in the gear you are downshifting to, and then while the rpms are still up put it into the lower gear.
