Transmission shifter stuck in Park

So I was driving to school today and on my way to school I locked the tranny in 2 at the speed of about 25 mph. The RPM's were not high or anything like that. I parked the car and when I was going home I found that its impossible to move the shifter. Its stuck in P and I dont think I am able to press the "button" on the shifter in completely like I do when it slips into gear.

I have had no problems with the tranny or shifter before this. But then again. I got the car some months ago and I am now starting to wish I never bought the damn thing. Seems like its a piece of junk due to a lot of other "small problems" like this..

The car is a 89 Iroc 350 with 700 tranny. What happened? What can I do. I got a permit over night so that I dont have to pay the meter all day, but what could be wrong here?

Please help me as soon as possible!

Go under the car a try and put it in drive using the tranny lever and see if i moves freely if it does try and get the car home and play with it then. And make sure someone is helping you from inside the car and pressing the brake while your under it.

Alright. I have a friend of mine that has some mechanical skills so I will se if I can get him to help me out there.

Is there some way that I can get this fixed, or do I have to crawl under the var everytime I want to drive anywhere? What do I have to do? Change the tranny?

Re: Transmission shifter stuck in Park

yeah you will have to play the elimination game, and eliminate possible causes/failures one at a time

if it were mine i would pull the shift plate off the console and disconnct the end of the treans shift cable and then pull it and see that the trans and cable work fine without the shifter connected to it

can you depress the shifter thum button ?

does it feel like its working and has good resistance still ?

i would say the problem is with the shifter assembly

than anything else

Well if you can get under the car and get it in drive bring it home and take the shifter console a part and see if anything is binding or broke. At this point I highly doubt its the tranny itself. its the linkage or the shifter.

Re: Transmission shifter stuck in Park

It seems like the **** is almost going all the way in when I press it, but not the way it does when I am able to shift it. I guess I just have to see if I am able to get it home and taken care of.

Thanks guys. I am grateful for any information!

Re: Transmission shifter stuck in Park

check and see if your brake lights are coming on when you hit pedal, could be the switch behind brake pedal went bad if your not getting signal from the switch that the brake is applyed then it wont come out of park

Re: Transmission shifter stuck in Park

I figured it out. It seems like the button is broke or something. I was able to remove the top of the stick and press that plastic "wire" down with my thumb. No biggie. But still anoying. Considering I unscrewed the entire mid section off before some guy came over and removed the top in 3 seconds:P

Oh well. Thanks a lot guys.

I have the same problem with my 91 camaro RS, everything went wrong at once. Dash would light up but starter wouldn’t engage. Between the whole process of elimination of symptoms of a car not starting, I put in a new starter, new battery, new ignition switch deep in behind the dash on the steering column, but still nothing getting to the starter. Although it used to start in park without pressing the brake, I thought it might be something to do with it, but no. But in trying that, I noticed it won’t come out of park and I can’t even press the release switch on the shifter. So I held the brake down with a stick and lo and behold, the brake lights are not coming on. So hopefully that might be the problem. I will keep you posted. I’m just hoping it’s not the next stage of elimination, because I’m still thinking it’s the ignition lock cylinder, and that’s a bitch to change on this model. I hope it’s what you say. We shall see 👍

Re: Transmission shifter stuck in Park

Heads up, there is no brake pedal interlock with pulling the auto shifter out of park, or cranking over the engine. Barking up the wrong tree here.

There is a P/N safety switch on the shifter under the console. That can/will prevent the engine from cranking over (no starter engagement).

RBob.
