That all depends on what you want for an end result.
Do you just want to be able to brag to your rĄcer buddies that you have a posi? If so, then a junk rear or carrier is all you need.
Do you want something that works right, will last a long time, and will stand up to some abuse? Tired of consistenly getting beat by .05 sec on your 60'? I.e., "function" over "spank-off"? Then maybe you'd go the other way.
I don't suppose it's too hard to figure out which side of THAT trade-off I'm on.
I have a 83 car, with the rear out of a 91 or 92, with PBR disk brakes. The stock Auburn POS "posi" that came in it is sitting on the shelf along with its grocery-cart/TPI gears (3.23). The rear now has the axle tubes welded all the way around, LCA relocation brackets, cap studs instead of bolts, Superior axles, an Eaton High Perf posi, a solid pinion spacer, a girdle cover, but unfortunately just the stock gears for the car (not the original gears themselves, but the same ratio... 3.73).

For instant gratification, find the cheapest complete rear assembly with the gear ratio and posi you can find. Try to get it for next to nothing or barter.
Then, while you are in the process of destroying it, save some money, aquire parts slowly and build (or have built) something decent, using your current assembly or if you have big HP ambitions, build a 9 inch.
I tried to go the cheapie route, and it's fun right now, but in the end I will have to replace/rebuild/do something different.
