Everything was working fine until I installed new carpet in my 84 Z. I am now running about 2800 rpm at 60 mph instead of the usual 2000 rpm. Is there anything in the console or interior that may affect this? I readjusted the tv cable with no difference. It's a 700r4 with 3.73's in the rear. Thanks.

i would lean more towards the side of it just being a coinecidense that it happened during your carpet install.

there is a couple of wires that hook up to the shifter underneath the console that have a portion to do with your torque converter lock up.

does it shift to fourth gear or not? if it does then it would have to do with your torque converter. if it doesnt shift to fourth then it will have something to do with the transmission or tv cable. go through all the gears manual to tell if its shifting or not

Yes, it shifts into 4th, but the rpm's are too high. I guess that the TC is not locking up. I jumped the A and F terminals and the TC locked up with a drop in rpm. Any ideas on what I should do next?

Check the brake pedal switches. One is for the TCC, may have either knocked it out of adjustment or knocked the connector off.

check the two wires that go to your shifter, you had mentioned something about your console so i asume you removed it or something, and you might have knocked these wires loose. they have a portion to do with locking up the torque convertor. they are switched together when in park or nuetral to not allow the convertor to lock up, what i did with mine was just tape the ends off so they it would allow the convertor to lock up. i had to do this when installing my b&m megashifter because there was no spot to hook it up. you can read about it on there website:

The brake switch apears to be working as it should. I checked the wires at the shifter and they are connected with no apparent damage. I would prefer not to make any modifications and correct the problem so it works as it should.

I think my torque converter is not locking either. I have two reasons so far to believe its not locking. The first is because I get about 14mpg on the highway when I think I should be getting closer to 20mpg. The second reason is because I did a test that someone mentioned in another thread. I stepped on the brakes when I was going 60mph and according to the person who mentioned the thread, the RPMs should have gone up up about 500rpm, but the RPMs went down as I was braking. I didnt see it jump up 500rpm. That lead me to believe that the torque converter had not locked up in the first place. What could it be? I have been getting a Code 15 from the ECM since I bought the car. I put in a new temp. sensor long ago but the problem still persists. I also checked the voltage at the temp. sensor connector and it was correct. The SES light comes on after driving for maybe 10 minutes. Could the ECM not be locking the torque convertor because its not getting a correct reading from the temp. sensor?

What are some ways to verify if the torque convertor is locking or not.

Sorry to jump in on your thread, but hopefully we can both get the help we need to fix this problem.

I went out today to test the torque convertor locking solenoid and it only locks when I force it to by jumping pins A and F in the ALDL connector. This means either the brake pedal switch is not working correctly or the ECM is not grounding the TCC solenoid, right?
