10 bolt experts help 2 or 3 series?

Hey guys can you help me out by looking at these pictures?
First off its an 86z28.... not original rearend but is a 10 bolt which currently has a 3.42 open diff. Im trying to put in this posi i have had laying around however i dont know what series it is... i put 3.73 gears on the posi and as you can see there is a major diff between the height of the 3.73 posi carrier, and the 3.42 open diff what is my problem? When i put the posi into the car there is way too much backlash, like not even close i dont think shims will help this much out.. what do i need to do?

Car: Formula
Engine: 6.0 LSX
Transmission: 4L60E
Axle/Gears: 9 Bolt 3:27
Those gears look like a thick series which would work on a 2 carrier posi.

Though I am not the subject matter expert, it appears that you have a series 2 & 3 carrier sitting side by side. I have a series 3 W 3.73 gears (factory posi) out of my 84z28. I am looking for an open carrier for a donor to build my spool. Maybe you could help me out.

yeah i might be interested in some trading, i just need to figure out what i have and what i need to get to make it all work

I have a 3.73 ring gear only that i know came off a 3 series carrier and it is the same size as the 3.73 gear that is on that posi so im pretty sure that the gear on there is ok i just dont know about the carrier im guessing it is a 2 series and the open diff that was in the car is a 3 series?

I have what I believe is an open carrier from an 84 TA. The housing code is
6EC which is 3.73 and I know it is definitely not a POSI. I'm looking for Series 3 POSI carrier, I don't know much about diffs, but I believe these are 26 spline. I have not cracked this one open yet. Very intersted in a trade. pm any interest.

You have a series 2 posi carrier. The only way that will work with the 3.73 gear is with a spacer. series 2 are for gear less than 3.42 if understand things correctly.

The 10 bolts are fairly strong. But I would definitely not use a spacer. I will wait and find the right carrier. I have an 89 TA that I know has a limited slip diff in it, I have not pulled it yet, not even sure what gear it has. Based on the specs I believe it to be less than a 3.42 which means it should be a series 2 but would be 28 spline axles. I think 86 and up had 28 spline, not positive.

What gear ratio are you looking for? and for what carrier, 2-series or 3-series?

Car: 1982 Trans-Am
Engine: 355 w/ ported 416s
Transmission: T10, hurst shifter
Axle/Gears: 10 bolt, true-trac, 3.73
That'll be somewhat hard to find. Your donor vehicles are '82-'89 I think, 3rd gens, with 3.73 gears. So only the 5 speed Z-28 styles. No V-6's would have it, and most autos would have lamer gears, hence non 3 series.

Chances are someone's upgraded their stuff to a 12 bolt or 9" and has no need for the rear, check the classifieds, or go aftermarket.

Car: 1991 S10 pickup 2700lbs

Axle/Gears: 3.08 7.625"
there were lots of 3.73 2.8L third gens...

and lots of these 10 bolt axles in many other vehicles other than these cars

you have billions of donors out there

go to the local junkyard and start pullign diff covers off of 7.5" axles

caprices, s-10s, and g body cars and so forth '70's and 80's and 90's years

you can swap spiders and or axle shafts if you find an 88-up donor so youll have the 28 spline instead

good luck

caprices and g-bodies had the 8.5" 10 bolt I thought?

And neither of those would have a posi carrier anyway. S10's had posi's, the gov-lock. Nobody wants that. The only useable 7.5" 26 spline posi that you'd want to use, would come in a 3rd gen camaro/firebird. And I was pretty sure the V-6's got the 3.42 series usually, but that I could be wrong about. Either way I don't think the base model, ie V6 cars got posi's.

A 3 series *Posi* is kinda hard to find, most of the cars that had them stock aren't hanging out in junkyards. At least from my experience.

camarokev, I did not get the pinion out, did not bring home a big enough socket after working 12 hrs and coming home to fight a fire...vol firefighter too. Sorry, will pull it tomorrow night and then exchange shipping info with you. you are going to get gears, bearings, races, shims, carrier (complete), cross pin and c-clips. All I need from you is the open carrier with no gears or bearings, shims would be nice though for measurement and initial set up.
