so im going to new jersey in about a month and my mom is going to tow the bird ... from missouri to new jersey 900 miles i dont have the money for a tow dolly they get way to exspensive when you need it for 2 weeks so im going to pull the drive shaft and get like tow bars or somehting of that effect and hook it up to her 2006 avalanche (spelling? ) and drag it the whole way there will this work anyother ideas on how to tow it ., anyinput would gbe great thanks

Just curious how much does it cost for a 2-wheel tow dolly in your area?It would be a much simpler way in the long run to tow an F-Body than trying to use a towbar on one.

There's no easy way to tow bar an f-body. Before I got my trailer, I flat towed my car to the track. The track isn't very far away but the longest I flat towed it was 300km one way. I fabricated some mounts through the driving light holes. It wasn't pretty but it worked. I removed the driveshaft and stuck a spare slip yoke back into the tranny to keep the oil in.

For what it's worth, it's better if you get a dolly or a car trailer.

well for renting a dolly is about 40 dollars a day .. or i can go with one way type deal and its like 500 bucks .. so its really not worth the money... so i just need to figure out a way to get this thing there ... pull the shaft and i was going to duck tape it so it wouldnt leak ... but i need a way to pull it .. even if i tow it backwards is fine so i can hook up to the rear axle or to the stabilizer bar ... anyother thoughts

U will kill the trans and possibly worse otherwise.

PErsonally, eat the $500 and rent the trailer and be done with it.

U-Haul rents dollies and trailers, I would seriously do that before I flat towed anything 900 miles.

ill be there for 2 weeks ... ya know 2 days there ... a week and a to stay and 2 days back thaats all .. i though if i pulled the drive shaflt and corked and trans it would be fine ... either way thanks for your input any other oponions ?

If your dont have the cash for a tow dolly just drive it or leave it home. Flat towing is not the greatest thing to do to any car. And like others have said you will either not beable to find a tow bar cheeper than the tow dolly or it will be cheep and unsafe, and may get you pulled over. I recomend U Haul, you should beable to reserve a dolly for the trip there and a seperate one for the way back for under $200

ok for a one way tow from zip code 63366 to 08731 is 500 for a tow trailer and 252 from a tow dolly that with 1150 miles free .. to bring it back at the ned of the week is 40 dollars a day or about 10 days ill be gone so 400 dollars .. i might be renting a car while im there instead ... anywho .. anymore thoughs maybe ? someone rent me a tow dolly or sell me a crappy trailer for 150 bucks ?

Just buy a 500 dollar beater to last you the month. If it dies, leave it on the side of the road and take a bus.

you can't tow it backwards on a tow bar. You have to tow from the front and leave the stearing un-locked or it won't turn.
- I just tow bar'ed Dans87GTA's car about month ago. - Smoked low gear planetary on his way down here. - Since his trans was hurt, we didn't bother dropping the ds a 3am on the side of the road. My homemade, fold-up, tow bar bolted right onto his front "frame" no issues, but only because my 2wd K5 is only about 6" of the pavement, and I used my drop-hitch from my burban. The nut on the ball coulda picked off highway reflectors, but we rolled on home, no problems. To tow bar one of these cars over any distance it would take a custom tow bar built to bolt to the front subframe, come forward past the nose, then step up to a regular hitch height.

You can ship the car for $300 or so. Check out the places on ebay. When you consider hauling a car 900+ miles it is going to run you upwards of $100 just in gas no matter how you haul it, trailer or not. If I were you I'd seriously consider shipping it.

$100 - scratch that - at $2.70/gal it is going to run you about $240 at 10mpg. If you do decide to tow it it is going to be a white knuckle trip. If you ship it you can sit back and enjoy the trip.
