Wow I need some help...

Well as some will know, and most will not, I have recently purchased an 84 Camaro Z-28. Needless to say I had to have it worked on the 1st week of having it. I had to get the carb overhauled and have a new temp sensor installed. Theres $750.00 right there.

Well in more recent news, and the 2nd week of ownership, I have run into another, much more serious, problem. Heres what happened. I just got off work and I started my car and put her in reverse. Well reverse was not where she was going. It was like I was in neutral. (And yes I checked to make sure I wasn't in neutral). Well I kept shifting from park to reverse and back and forth and finally she managed to engage into reverse. Well she went into drive just fine and I got home normally. Here is where I flipped out. I pull into my driveway and I center over my drip pan and put her into park. When I let off of the brake pedal, the car started to ease backwards in a slow roll. Wow is all I could think to myself. What is wrong with my transmission?! And I hope this doesn't mean replacing a transmission, because as a high schooler, I can't aford a bill like that. I am really depressed about this because I have always wanted to own a car like this, and I get this awesome chance to do it, and now I have a yard ornament sitting in my driveway. Any insight into this problem would help me so much. Thanks for everything.

Check to make sure the cable sheath hasnt come loose from the housing. This will cause you to be able to get drive (well at least i could) but i couldnt get anything else, except nuetral. Ill try to find you a pic to better explain.

Something like this. It will be at the shifter, or the trans end. Possibly could be the nut has come loose and the cable needs adjusted

Get under your car on the drivers side, on the side of the tranny you'll see where the cable ends and shifts a black piece of metal. Try disconnecting the cable and shifting the piece with your hand. Getting into park takes a tiny bit extra force, but that way you know for sure you're in park. If the car rolls, take it to a mechanic, if not then you need a $50 cable.

yup,
I had a cable problem like that once.....
It must have been inbetween neutral and drive because all of a sudden I lost power, I kept my foot on the gas trying to merge into traffic but it was not working..... the shifter said I was in D, so I just touched it to make sure and WHAMMO!!!! It was like a neutral drop close to 4000 rpm. It ruined the transmission so I replaced it with another one. I took it out for a test drive and had the same problem, thats when I found it was the cable, broken just like in the picture. I had to put a rock under my wheel to block it and crawl under the car to shift it from park to drive by hand.
not fun
