New 355 - Now Tranny Trouble...

I just overhauled my '87 Z28 with rebuilt 350 (had 305) new Edelbrok carb, some 'look good' upgrades, etc -- got it back from the shop mid-June, since then nothing but tranny troubles.

I have a 700R4 transmission and since the engine swap shifting is just plain awful. Transmission was fine on previous engine and shop says that there's nothing wrong with the transmission other than it can't handle the 355.

- Stays in first way too long.
- Hard shift from first to second, just about throws me through the windshield.
- Driving around 45-50 can't maintain speed and shifts up/down - up/down - up/down.

The good news is on the highway once I'm going she flies -- actually scared myself.

Had a shift kit from summit put in it as I was told that would help the issue and am now being told that it's a good as it gets, that the 700R4 can't handle that 350 engine...

I need a serious opinion from the experts here -- any takers? I'm about ready to find a local speed shop to see if they can help, but would rather spend the money on GAS! LOL.

Thats bull crap 700r4's can be built to hold more than 700 hp. Its just that a stock 700 isn't exaclty the storongest stock transmission. You might need a rebuild.

You need to adjust the detent cable. The 700's use throttle position to calculate shift points. I'm not sure of the exact procedure but I'm sure that's what you need. Someone in the know should chime in here.

I'm callin BS on the power thing. Anyway, did you try adjusting the TV cable? If it's out of whack that'll caust it to shift late and slow. It'll also wear it out real fast then you'll need another new tranny. If the tranny isn't slipping and you have all 4 gears, you should be fine. Try adjusting the cable and report back.

That's what I was thinking -- the shop keeps saying "adjust" "adjust" and the research I did on the web says "set" TV cable, there is NO "adjusting." You set it to be full open and it's done, but if you don't "set" then it will never be right and will kill the tranny pronto. The site I went to is called www.bowtieoverdrives.com and they have a great set of directions just for the 700R4. I printed them out and will try this next week.

NastyL98_T/A - can you check out that webpage for me and see if that's what you're talking about? It's got three parts (lessons) for setting the TV cable. If yes, thanks a bundle!

700r4 can handle pretty much all you can build to a 355 and if it didn't it wouldn't cause it to be wacky, it'd just kill it... somethings gotta be out, probably your tv cable, or maybe the tranny was well worked in BEFORE the swap?
