Is Newer S-10 Torque Converter Lock-Up Compatable With 85 700R-4?
Have a 85 TPI 305 with 700r-4 and Corvette servo, mods in sig. Have read good things about the S-10 torque converter (#24202310). This is available from GM for around $175.00 +$35.00 core. However, I've recently heard from a friend that the lock-up set-up of this newer 90's era converter may not be compatable with the likes of a 85 700R-4, both 30 spline. Anyone know this to be true or false? Thanks in advance.

It will work just fine. I ran for about a year with a converter out of a '98 GMC Jimmy. Starting in 1998, GM started using the EC³ (Electronicly Controlled Capacity Clutch) Converter system on 3.8L F-bodies and ALL Trucks. These systems used a special Woven Fiber clutch in the converter. They can be used in non-EC³ systems, however it doesn't work the other way. If you use the old paper lining converters in an EC³ system, the TCC will not function properly. Also be on the lookout of input shaft changes. Starting in like '00 or something, the input shafts on some of the vehicles are different, and require a different TC to go with it.
But like I said, if you jus get the good 'ol L35 converter, you'll be alright.

GMTech, based on what you said, the S-10 converter #24202310 is in fact the "L-35" converter and WILL fit and function properly in a 85 700R-4? I need to be sure before I tear into it, etc. Since you've used one, will the higher stall (approx 2025 vs 1397 stock) be enough to make much SOTP improvement? Thanks again.

Yes, you should be OK. I have not seen an L35 converter that couldn't be used.
I noticed a big improvment. You'll get more stall out of it than what its rated at since you are putting out more HP/TQ than what the 4.3L did (I hope you are )

I agree. The L35 converter(s-10) will stall higher than the stock one. I have found it to be good for a stock or slightly modified engine. They are pretty durable also. I got mine used and the guy that had it before me was putting out some respectable power and abused it often and its still holding up fine close to a year later in my car.
