Need stronger rear.....but I'm cheap.

Hey everyone. I want to run slicks on my camaro. Plus with the HP the rear end won't hold up. Now I can do several things. Like for instance buy a new moser rear. But I'm poor. Does somebody make weld on brackets for a 12 bolt rear? So I could just find a donor rear and mod it to fit. I could always make the brackets myself but I've been told the angles are very difficult to deal with and I'll end up doing donuts down the track.
Any help would be great.:hail:

build a jig around a 10 bolt, remove the brackets, and then relocate them to a 9" or 12 bolt. wouldn't have to work for nasa to do it.

Although it sounds easy, it's not quite that simple. First of all you need to find a 12 bolt or 9" roughly the same width as a third gen diff. Most are way too wide. Proper backspace rims can compensate for a couple of inches wider but stock rims will need a diff that's very close to the same width.

All the brackets for the springs, shocks and panhard bar can easily be moved over but finding a way to attach the torque arm can make a cheap project very expensive. Moser or Currie, I can't remember, will sell you a mounting bracket that needs to be welded onto a 9" housing. It's very difficult to adapt a mounting bracket for the torque arm onto a 12 bolt because the housing is cast iron.

By the time you're done with the "cheap" swap, it might cost more than just buying an aftermarket bolt-in housing. Buying just a 9" housing package that includes axles is less than $1000 US. Pick up a 9" center section locally for the same axle spline 28 or 31 and pop it in.

I cheaped out on a 9". I found one from a 1970 F100. The pinion is 2" over to the passanger side. On a street car this may cause problems after high mileage. The diff housing was $25 for the auto wrecker. I bought strange 31 spline axles. Roughly $800. Bought a center section with 4.56 gears and a 31 spline spool for $600. I welded on all the suspension hardware and converted over to ladder bars ($45 at a swap meet). Not counting the new ford brakes, I have dual bolt pattern rims so it was easier to just use ford brakes, and the time and labour to do the swap, it cost me roughly $1500 Canadian to put a 9" under my car. That's a lot cheaper than $2000 US. When I add in the new brakes, drums, studs, brake lines, etc the cost is somewhere between $1800 and $2000 by the time I was done.

stephen unless you've run into some differant 12 bolts than i have they're all cast steel not iron. very easy to weld with LH eletrodes. either are fairly simple to narrow as well, just make sure you narrow it to a stock or aftermarket length axle. you can buy new ends and replacement tubes. if you can weld and have decent fabrication skills it wouldn't be a difficult job. there are several jigs you can buy, or look at and copy to aid in the set up.

I'm considering getting the ford 9" center section from moser. Then just buying a diff and gears. Then just use my stock brakes.
Heres the link: http://www.moserengineering.com/mose...ts.asp?CatID=8
let me know what you think.
Thanks for the reply's guys.
Also why are the complete boltins so much more money?
Thanks again.

ede: OK, cast steel then. Either way not everyone can weld cast and if you go to that much fabrication work then it isn't cost effective. There is the satisfaction of being able to do it yourself regardless of the cost.

Chrisman2000: Good plan. You could even find a cheap center section with gears from the local auto wreckers for far less than what I paid. If you're luck you may find a "posi". Just don't order the diff with axles until you get the carrier that you want. Ford made 28 and 31 spline carriers. Once you know what the spline count will be you can order the housing with the correct splines on the axles. Ford 28 spline axles are strong but even factory 31 spine axles can take a huge amount of abuse. Even 28 spline Moser axles will be fine unless you start producing 500+ hp. 31 spline will probably cost more anyway.
