whats up w/ my separator plate?..pics

This plate has obviously been modified. If anyone could give any insight to what might have been done here (besides the obviousness of this being some form of a shift kit) EX. what these holes feed and if these hole sizes are excessive or not. theres also a dent in the backside of the hole directly below the .125 hole where the check ball has (i guess) been forced outward pushing up a trench in the backside of the plate and leaving a hump on this side. The hole next to it has the same issue -just not as bad. This cant be normal.

This is the backside that I was talking about. Any clues? This transmission is on its way out but Id like to know what was going on here so it won't happen again. It only had 4 check ***** above the plate and only 1 in the VB. this tranny has a bad 2-3 flair, won't downshift into 1st at a full stop, and does'nt engine brake in any gear . I also checked the pump boost valve -it appears to be a .471. Its not quite .5 but much larger than a .422 that I had layin around here. Thanks for your help.

The .160 hole at the top of the plate is the 4th gear feed. The .110 hole at the bottom of the plate is 3rd gear feed. The .125 hole near the middle 2nd gear feed. The .110 hole on the right is the 2nd gear band release. The .160 hole just to the left of the .110 is the 3-2 downshift. To help eliminate the 2-3 flair up, (1)Get a Corvette servo, (2)Plug the hole just above and to the left of the 2nd gear band release, (3)Shrink down the 3-2 downshift to .140, (4)Open up 3rd gear feed to .155-.187, (5)Shrink 2nd gear feed to .086 with the stock torque converter or .096 with a 9.5-10" TC, (6)Open up 4th gear feed to .187. This should help you out quite a bit, "if" the clutches & band are in good condition. You will need 4 checkballs in the case, & 1 in the valve body in the front, you will not need one where you plug the valve body plate. To plug the hole in the VB plate, use aluminum welding rod or solder, radius both sides of hole that will be plugged with 3/8-1/2" drill bit.

Thank you very much probuilt. Ill be coming to you for parts when I need them. By the way, whats the purpose of plugging the hole next to the 2-3 band release? Also I had only one checkball in the VB and it may have been the one under the hole I need to plug -so where would the other one go? Is it the one for the overrun clutch? would it be easier to start with a new plate to drill out instead of shrinking all those holes? By the way, I have a 2800 hughes lockup converter. Thanks again for all your help!!

Go to your nearest gm dealer. The plates are still available for most. You'll probably still have to shrink 2nd gear hole. I just built a 89 trans with a trango 2/3 kit and dana's hole sizes. Works great. THANKS again DANA.

who is Dana and are the hole sizes you used the same as the ones probuilt recommended? what second gear hole are you referring to that you say will still be too big on a stock plate -since Im ordering one on monday? also I heard about plugs in the transgo kit to plug up a hole in the plate -probably the same hole that probuilt told me to close -what are they made of and are they only available in the transgo kit? Thanks for the replies and help. This info is incredibly valuable to me because Im going to rebuild my trans myself and want to do it right (with the right parts) the first time. I have confidence in my ability, a book , a video, and all kinds of tools and plenty of time but the more I know the better off I am. Im really just trying to findout all the trans' weaknesses and what causes them so I can more easily understand whats going on in there.

Dana, is Probuilt. Might as well buy your parts from him. He has the transgo kit much cheaper than I paid here locally. Without Dana's help I would have went back stock. I think the 700r4s are real finicky. The parts must be matched for it to work right. I don't care to have nor can I have a second gear that breaks the tires loose. I live in snow country. Talk to Dana, he'll sell you the right parts. P.S. my first tranny only lasted about 3000 miles, due to CHEAP parts. Good luck!!

Theres no doubt that Ill be getting the transgo kit from Dana at Probuilt. I would like to know what that hole plug will do though. I have a new separator plate coming and Im gonna wait till I get the kit before I start drilling out holes. By the way, whats the main difference between the 2 transgo kits. Obviously one has the accumulator package -so what does the other one do about the accumulator? Just reuses the stock parts? What I think is that the kit w/ the accumulator offers normal shifts at part throttle and hard shifts at full throttle and the other kit offers firm shifts all the time. Am I close or way off?
