I'm gonna need the th400, right? and other ?s

I'm refering to the 86 I'm putting a 461 into, the project is starting here shortly. I figured I'd get a jump on the tranny side of things by keeping my eye out for a trans.

but I have to know which one, I'd like a muncie 22 rockcrusher, but I don't know how much I could pick one up for????, I know th350 are cheap but I don't know if they can handle the abuse of a 461???, so I figured th400 is the way to go. I'd like to put a reverse manual valve body in it, shift kit, and high stall.

please tell me your opions, I plan on driving this on the street everyonce in a while (2-3,000 miles a year) rear end will most likely be a 9 inch with 3.73-4.10s depending on other variables

Talk to Dana at Pro Built. He can answer all your questions about automatics.

(How about a nice TH200-4R w/Spohn crossmember/torque arm, 3000-4000 stall w/lockup; retains the overdrive for those 3000 road miles unlike the TH350 or TH400, better 1-2 ratio and stronger than TH700.)

A turbo 400 will hold up is it's build right. Building it right usually requires replacing bushings and clutches and a thourough inspection of hard parts. Adding more frictions to the direct clutch is common, adding one to the intermediate is possible too. It mandatory to use either an old type direct drum with a 34 element sprag clutch or one from a 4L80E. I just built two th400's and set one up with an old type and the other with a 4L80 drum.
A manual valve body eliminates the need for a shift kit. I have a reverse manual from turbo action in my th400 with a 3000 converter and 3.73 gears.

Depending on the torque converter required, a TH400 setup the way you're planning should be around $1500. That would include everything.

I ran a TH350 for a couple of years with no problems except for blowing up the intermediate sprag once.

I went to a TH400 last fall because I also wanted a transbrake and it was cheaper and easier to build the TH400 than it was the TH350. I'm using an 8" converter that stalls around 5000 rpm in my car. The valve body is a Turbo Action, full manual, reverse pattern with transbrake.

I use a 9" diff with 4.56 gears and 29" tall tires. I was using a 7.5" 10 bolt with 4.10 gears and ran as quick as 11.24 at 121 mph with it. When I went with a transbrake I decided to go with a 9" diff since I didn't think the 7.5" could take more than one hit.

A full manual (forward pattern) TH400 will run $995.00 outright with a one year warranty. It will have the 34 element HD sprag, 6 Borg Warner Hi-Energy direct w/Kolene steels, 4 clutch BW Hi-Energy 2nd gear w/Kolene steels, late BW Hi-Energy 2nd gear band, Trans-Go Performance full manual Shift kit, and all the other things that I do to this unit to make it hold up. Torque converter will depend on the size of the cam, intake manifold, size of carb or injection, etc.

NO! I do not build reverse valve bodies, (1) dangerous, if you blow the engine you have to downshift to find neutral, (2) does not use 2nd gear band for braking and sometimes not 1st gear band for braking either, (3) in most cases it does not use the modulator. Using the modulator can triple the life of the transmissions front pump and sealing rings. The reverse valve body started out in the 1960's when shifters were not all that good. Most reverse valve bodies "do not" use accumulation which softens part throttle shifts & extends the life of the drive train. I could go on.....

I gotta agree with Dana, those revers pattern vale bodies are most all full manual shift besides, which is a total PITA on the street. It's an idea whose time has come and gone.

Thanks pro built, you saved me there, I plan on buying the trans a year from now

when you say full manual control you mean exactly that right, cause some kits will shift for you if you put in in 3rd, I don't want that, I want to shift very early into 2nd or third when i want to;

if I put the shifter in 3rd, if i want to take off in third, not have the tranny shift though the gears for me...so is this the right tranny for me (the one for 995.00)
