Sleeve question.....Speedo Gear Swap
I've been reading all the posts about speedo gear swaps. I just put in a 3.23 rear, it was a 2.73 from the factory. I know I'm going to use my 17T Drive and a 44T Driven gear. The area where I get lost is the sleeve, I have a 87 T/A with VSS. Do I need to change the sleeve for this? I keep reading it's only for mechanical and nothing about electronic drives. Any help you can provide would be great!! Also is there different part numbers for the VSS driven gears versus the ones for a mechanical setup??
Thanks,
P

Yes there are different gears for the vss set up. There are two different types of vss. One has a plastic drive gear which interchanges with older mech speedos, and a plastic driven gear (which can be changed) which works only on that type of vss.
The other type of vss uses a tone ring and a reluctor, you'll need some sort of recalibration box if you have this type, I have no experience with them.

I just changed mine from a 38 to 45. No change on the adapter was nessasary. Check the diameter of your driven gears, if they are the same, you're good to go.

I just changed mine to a 45 tooth driven gear, to accomodate my change of gears from 2.73 to 3.42.
I needed a new sleeve because the shaft on the driven gear wouldn't fit through the hole on the old sleeve. It cost me $94 Canadian for that thing
If this happens to you, I think you might want to try drilling out the hole in the old sleeve to see if you can make it large enough for the 45 tooth gear. Or get ready to be robbed by GM

Hey, Todd, which dealer did you get your sleeve from?

It won't work. The reason there are two different sleeves is because the driven gears have different diameters, so the holes in the sleeves need different offsets.

Hmmm... just for fun call Jack Carter's parts department, ask for Thomas, give him the P/N for your sleeve and see how much he says.
