700r4 has lost all gears

Recently, my 700-r4 has decided not to put power to the ground. Here's what happened:

My car had been running a bit rough lately. It wouldn't even idle smoothly, but the exhaust sounded fine. It was friday, so I thought I'd take a look at it over the weekend. Well, on my way home from work there is kind of a thunk noise, and my engine revs up. I give it some gas, but it revs like it is in neutral. I thought maybe it'd gone to neutral so I tried a few other gears, but nothing. If I really rev up the engine I get some forward movement (or reverse if in reverse), but very little. When the engine is being reved up, the driveshaft spins only slightly, but proportianate to the amount the rear wheels are spinning. That isn't much, though. If I really rev up the engine, I'll go forward a bit, or backward a bit, but only on a level surface. No more than 1 or 2 mph.

I checked the tranny fluid and it is Dark red. It smells pretty funky, but not what I would call burnt smelling. The fluid has been in there for *** knows how long, so who knows. I'm dropping the pan tonight, don't know if there are bits of metal or not.

Anyone know what's up? Help!

You'd definately get a lot of help in the Tranny board here..

Now, just a guess, but you might check your torque converter. Seems strange to lose ALL gears, forward and backwards, at once.

Your pump may have gone out to. If the pump doesn't move fluid the trans won't pull.

I've seen 700's with stripped forward clutch splines, this would effect reverse too.

With stripped forward clutches?, you lose forward movement only, it does not affect reverse at all.

sounds like the front pump, you need to get a pressure gauge on it to tell without removeing it, but since its broken you have to take it out any way. Sorry! get a tremec

Since you lost it all, you can rule out the clutches. You'll need to find something that ALL gears have in common. That could be Torque converter, pump, input shaft, etc.... You could probably rule out the input shaft from breaking, since it will move some if you rev it up. Either way, you'll have to pull the tranny out. Good luck.

Thanks for the replys so far!

MdFormula350: At least a fist full of small metal shavings. The magnet was coated and there were still silver swirls in the pan fluid as well as what I poured out of the filter. As I said, the fluid was dark brown and stank. (FYI: dragging yourself across the concrete to get under your car may not be easy, but once you spill a quart or two of transmission fluid on the floor, you'll slide across the floor with ease!)

I was asking a guy at work about this and he said to just change the fluid and filter and see if it starts working (he was leaning towards pump failure). Or is it more likely that both the TC and the tranny will need to be rebuilt/replaced?

Damn tranny goes and dies about a week before I need to head off to college! Don't cars know that their college attending owners barely have money for food, much less a new transmission?

It may just be the pump is shot, but w/ all the metal you describe in the pan, you'd want to send the TC out to have cleaned or replaced, and also think about flushing your existing cooler or bypassing it for a better cooler.

well the "same" thing happened to me, but it was my fault.... I replaced the TV valve and put the C-clip on the outer land rather than the inner, and the first time In started the car I heard a thwak on the tranny pan and then nothing would happen when I put it in gear..... could be a possibility, who knows
