FiTech 38350 Speed sensor question
Hey yall,
So I've been putting in this Fitech kit on my 85 iroc and everything has been going smooth up until today. I pulled the gauge cluster out to see if there was a connection on the speed sensor that the new harness would hook up to and sure enough there isn't. I called fitech and they were saying the harness for the kit is designed for the speed sensor on later cars that is located on the tail shaft of the tranny. The tech guy didn't know that the camaros had a speed sensor in the gauge cluster but he let me know which wire was the high and low on the new harness. I've been looking around and I can't find which wire is which on the speed sensor so I figured I'd come here to see if anyone happens to have figured this out or if anyone knows which wires are which on the factory vss?

Might ask tech support what signals the ecm can accept. The yellow box on your ip is an optical Vss 2k ppm.Sends an optical Vss signal through the cluster and c207 to the 1226870 ecm pin a10. It might be easier just to call Howell or use a painless retrofit4k ppm Vss .

The ecm can accept any signal and you adjust it in the settings until the handheld's speed matches your actual speed. I was using a 4L60E so I did have the plug on my tailshaft, but considering this signal is supposed to be acquired from the tailshaft, I'd reckon you want to intercept the signal coming off the speedometer. I would imagine you could probe for the high/low signals with a multimeter and fake the input with a drill.

I should have been more specific, any speed of PPM signal that comes from the tailshaft can be corrected for which I believe is magnetic pulse only. I don't imagine an additional box would be necessary, but if the box comes with instructions on how to hook it in, they could perhaps be used as a template to accommodate the VSS input for the FiTech ecm.

Re: FiTech 38350 Speed sensor question
Thank you guys for the input. I'll see if I'm able to get some readings off of the current vss this weekend and I'll let you guys know if I have any luck.

seems like a lot of work to convert the signal. Here’s some info on converting it. Would be much easier to send it a magnetic pulse signal.

Re: FiTech 38350 Speed sensor question
Are you asking what will work or how you can go to a different speedometer?
you could change the tail housing and run a Vss then convert the signal if needed with a Dakota digital sgi-100bt to run a aftermarket speedo. But why ? Just do the retrofit Vss from painless post #2 and run current speedometer off the cable. There are other inline Vss from Dakota depending of the signal needed to run a speedometer.
but if this is designed around a magnetic pulse get the 4k ppm and calibrate in there software sounds like it allows correction.

Oh man I didn't realize that was an inline sensor that's my bad. I'm probably just going to do that then. Thank you all for the help

I’m not sure how tight the retrofit Vss is to install but worst case could get something like this to get more room. Just keep away from exhaust.
