L98 Rebuild- Cam Questions
So after much thought, I decided to rebuild an L98 instead of buying an L31 crate motor and swapping the cam then spring issues and so on.
I will be using a AFR Enforcer heads, Accel/Lingenfelter intake, AS&M runners and a ported plenum.
I found a used engine to break down and found a local machine shop/builder.
The next dilemma is the cam again. Crower 00482LM is back ordered until mid-July. So I asked Summit their recommendation and they came up with Summit Pro SBC cam SUM-8801.
Crower 00482LM - $422 Dur @ .050” Lift: 213°/221° RR: 1.5/1.5 Gross Lift: .505”/.525” LSA: 114° RPM: 1900 to 5900 Redline: 6400
Summit 8801- $279 Dur @ .050” Lift: 212/218 RR: 1.5/1.5 Gross Lift: .525/520 LSA: 110 RPM: 1500-6000
1) Anyone with experience with Summit Pro SBC cams?
2) Any thought on the specs on the Summit vs Crower?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I was always under the impression that L98 heads didn't usually work with more than about .480 lift before coil bind without doing head work/swapping springs, retainers, etc. Seems like the same amount of work in the end.

Main difference I see between those cams is the LSA. If you are looking for something with a 114 LSA the Comp Cam 304-8 is pretty close to that with 210/220 duration and .51/.51 lift with a 114L

@spurgeon76 Is that cam a "step nosed" cam? I assume that is what I have to have for this L98 block. Another guy recommended Comp Cam 08-503-8 but it is also on back-order.

I say order the Crower cam now and be ready to drop it in the day it arrives. Three months seems like a longish time until you're 19.584 'while I'm in theres' deep.

I ran a 268/278, 218/228-110, .497/.502 (1.6 rockers) flat tappet in my old 1986 IROC with a 9.8:1, 355 with a ported TPI base and plenum and SLP runners. Ran pretty good with 24lb SVO injectors and a 1988 350 ePROM without any tuning other than increase base timing and adjustable fuel pressure regulator. It pulled right at 18" vacuum at 750rpm with a little bump to it. I ran a 3" exhaust with a Welded Dynomax dual 2.5" outlets and received a lot of comments on how it sounded.
The Summit 8802 Pro SBC hydraulic roller is close to what I ran, 267/275, 218/227-112, but with more lift. It might be a touch too much cam if you're planning on running the stock torque converter, but would be about perfect for a 2400 - 2800 stall speed converter.

Apologies, I did not see there was a “9” in there. It is a Crower 00482LM.
