High Idle

Normal operating temp it idles between 900 and 1200 rpm in neutral. Usually 1000 to 1100 rpm. I removed the Idle Air Control valve and cleaned it with carb cleaner. Put it back in and it seemed to work for a day. Next day high idle again. I removed the IAC again and cleaned it and the ports until they ran clean. Put it back in and still high idle. I bought a new one and put it in and still high idle. Some times it will be at 1100 and just drop to 7-800. Some times the rpm varies. I sprayed with carb cleaner anywhere that would be related to vacuum and I couldn't find any leaks. I've red a couple different ways to reset the IAC but they didn't help. Any ideas?

Re: High Idle

Does it ratchet when commanded in ? Might command in and wiggle the wires to see if intermittent bad connection.

Sorry but I don't know what that means.

Re: High Idle

Does anybody have any ideas on what I did wrong or what I should check or try?

Re: High Idle

Try the minimum idle air adjustment procedure.

Re: High Idle

Bad TPS? I had a similar issue, high idle that was inconsistent. Sometimes it would idle normal and then all of a sudden it would jump up. TPS stands for Throttle Position Sensor. There is a test for this but if yours acts normal sometimes it might test normal.

Re: High Idle

I reset the IAC that way before but I did it again anyway. Then I checked the TPS with my VOM and it wasn't close. I bought a new one and that was just barely out of spec so I tweaked the metal lever and was able to adjust it right to spec. I took her out for a ride yesterday & today and came to a complete stop many many times and it idled right down to 550 in drive, 700 in N. It used to push you right threw an intersection. Take you foot off the brake and take off. Thanks for all the help.
