removing cats?

So,

My mechanic needs to saw through my exhaust in order to install my Spohn torque arm/cross member. The problem is caused by the combination of my dual cats and a drive shaft safety loop on the cross member.

I'll need to take the GTA to a shop to have the exhaust welded back together. If I have the cats removed, will my computer start throwing a code? Any potential downsides to having this done?

Thanks!

Re: removing cats?

Removing the cats should not throw any codes. However, it is illegal ( federal law) strictly speaking, and most exhaust shops won't do this kind of work. They would weld them back in for you. Might be able to find someone who will do it.

Re: removing cats?

Thanks for letting me know it won't throw codes. Are there any negative side effects in terms of the tuning of the car, operation of the engine, etc?

I was thinking about getting each section with the cats flanged so I can swap in a cat-less pipe for racing and swap in a pipe with cats for on-road use.

What size are the pipes where the cats are? If I wated to upgrade to a high-flow cat, what would be my best option?

Thanks!
Bill

Re: removing cats?

The factory cats flow fairly decent (275 cfm each) for a mild motor and don't cost enuff hp to worry about if your stock or mild.
The best thing to do would be swap in some aftermarket mandrel bent 2.5 inch pipe in front of the cats and ditch the small factory kink bent 2inch stuff.

Even with the parts your talking about, I'm not really sure Y he needs to cut the pipes, they really aren't that close to the trans X member and should have plenty of room to install the new stuff.

I've got a drive shaft safety loop which complicates things. I think it would have fit fine if it wasn't for that part.
