TPI 083 Head Questions

So I am back with a few more questions. Having trouble making a few decisions and would appreciate some advice.

My goal right now: is to fix the coolant leaks both in the intake and heads gasket so I can drive it for a while before rebuilding the motor.

Scenario: Car has 150K on it so I have to assume the heads have 150K on them, they are the 083 cast iron heads. Right now I do not have the time nor money to work on the short block so I am definitely not putting new heads on the car yet.

Are all head shops created equal, probably not so is there something I should be ask or looking for?

So it probably would make sense to have a head shop shave them since the 083 heads have 76cc cambers. At least that way they are super smooth.

But I am stuck if I should put any other time and money into them.

The intake ports need porting, how hard or easy is it to get a porting kit and match to the intake gasket? Do I need to pull the valves out or can I just put the port facing down and clean it well after porting? Is it worth the time and money?

Do I invest in a valve job? If I do that do I need need springs, retainers, etc. Is it worth it for these heads or can I drive it as is for another 50K miles with no problems?

Hoping someone who has experience with these heads can give me some guidance.

Re: TPI 083 Head Questions

083's have a 64cc chamber.

I would have them checked for straightness, mill as needed.

3 angle valve job is pretty standard and would be a good idea.

As for porting, if you have not done it before, I would wait. Practice on a couple junk intakes first.

Most of the benifits from porting are seen under the valves. Gasket matching alone does very little.

Plan on replacing some or all the valve guides, and springs. Thd machine shop should check and tell you what needs done beforehand.

Re: TPI 083 Head Questions

IMHO I wouldn't waste a dime on 083 heads.
The intake port is way too low for good air flow.

Re: TPI 083 Head Questions

i would not invest any money in those 083 heads... I had mine redone about 4 years ago with a 3 angle valve job and manely stud screw in studs and all for my gm hotcam and I was disappointed with the results... should have went with afr 195 heads....
