Tracked Down Elusive Fuel Smell, Not Sure What To Fix/Replace.
I replaced the injectors about a month ago and every since I've had a gas vapor smell off and on and I could not find the exact source. I read all the past forum on the topic, checked everything suggested there, replaced some old hoses on the tank vent line and evaporation canister lines, still got the smell.
Yesterday afternoon, I got back home from a little trip and popped the hood. I have checked injectors and fuel line connections many times and found nothing and it was the same this time, everything dry as a bone. While poking and sniffing around I got a whiff of gas vapor coming from the back of the engine. After poking around some more I found that the cold start injector nut at the back of the fuel rail was wet. It was getting dark, and it's difficult to reach without removing the plenum, but I managed to get a crow foot wrench on it to see if it was tight. It was quite tight, but I loosened it and re-tightened it again. I started the engine and let it build pressure, and checked it again. It was still weeping a little gas, so my next step is to take the injector out and look for the cause of the leak.
I suspect it may be an O-ring on one of the fittings, or maybe a cracked tube. Can you still get the parts?

the o-ring kit from autozone is gp soresen 800-9211, You can also use 89 programing and eliminate the problematic 9th injector.

stock eproms are soldered into the memcal so you would need a uv eraser and programer that could do 27c128 and 27c256 eproms or moates.net g1 and a sst27sf512 and a burn2. The 89 programing $6e for the 1227165 ecm takes care of the cold start issue and is designed to work without the ninth injector. The broadcast code aujm is a good file to use for a l98 automatic iron heads. The autozone o-rings just come with the crossover tubes the small one for the 9th injector feed tube and the large one around the bottom of the ninth injector to runner and the large one for around the rail fitting number 107 in the picture. I hope that picture helps

Yes, the diagram helps. I think the little o-ring (#104) might be the problem. I'm ordering the o-ring kit and I'm going to wait for the spare injector to arrive before I tear the thing down again just in case. The re-programing is a bit more than I want to get into at the moment, maybe later when I learn more about it.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Well, I think I've fixed it. Sunday I took the cold start injector and tubing off, and sure enough the little o-ring (#104) had a flat spot on it. I also took the male connector fitting #105 out and checked o-ring #107, it was fine. I put it back together with a new o-ring and used some teflon tape on the connector threads. I've run it through several hot/cold cycles now, gas smell is all gone and the connection has stayed dry. Another problem solved, thanks for the help tunedperformanc.
