Which EGR valve do i need?

im so lost.

i just recently aquired my 89 T.A. vin 8

i have been slowly replacing just about every sensor just for good measure so i know they are good as of now.

i was planning on redoing the gaskets and replacing some other sensors tomorrow. as well as swapping the egr solenoid over to the 95 caddy version. and figured i should get a new egr while i was at it.

problem is the parts store ordered one and it doesn't match the one on my car. the one i currently have comes up under the 305 tpi. is it possible the PO changed it with the wrong one? he did alot of weird things to this poor car.
i am having rough idling as well as massive fuel consumption would having the wrong egr on cause it? i rarely get a check engine light. hasnt come one and i cant remember what code it was last time ti came on but it was egr related.

Re: Which EGR valve do i need?

Since you don't know what was done to the car previously, I would go by the part number in the parts book.

the 8th digit of the vin if it is is 8 would be s l98 350 tpi, If your engine is running rich you should ohm your injectors check you cts and tps with a ohm meter or scanner and also pull the vacuum line to the fpr to see if you have fuel in the line.

Re: Which EGR valve do i need?

i have already replaced all the injectors and CTS and have checked and adjusted the TPS to the correct setting. the PO had messed with the base idle to keep it running enough to get it home i guess.

he also had one injector that was mismatched and was ALWAYS spraying. that was the first thing i fixed.

i aquired a GM replacement EGR valve. so along with some other goodies going on this week this baby should purr again.
got me a set of comp cams magnum rocker arms. (roller tip) and a full roller timing chain. with a pair of edelbrock runners.

i remember seeing something about using rtv sealant when doing the plenum gaskets. any advice?

I don't think you'll need to use RTV on the plenum gaskets. But if you feel the need to use it make sure the sealant is O2 sensor safe. It should say so on the package.

im using the 95 caddy solenoid now since the orig one was falling apart and aparently glued together.

Re: Which EGR valve do i need?

it doesn't matter witch one goes to witch on the solenoid. the vacuum signal starts at the bottom of the the tb and goes to the solenoid from the solenoid to the egr.

I'm not sure what the 95 caddy solenoid looks like, but the tpi solenoid has a black plastic vacuum port and a bright metal vacuum port. The black plastic port goes to engine vacuum while the metal port goes to the egr valve.
