I have an 89 GTA and the car wont run, i replaces the MAF, TPS, and just today i pulled the computer out and saw it had a hypertech chip from a 87 corvette so i bought a entire new computer from gm and a new prom from gm. Got everything installed and when to go crank it over and it just spins still not start im out of options the check engine light is on and im going to check it out tomorrow what else can i do, im at my wits end

what are the letters on the top of the memcal you just bought ? was it for a 89 ? If so you maybe deal with a vats issue. Do you have injector pulse ?

im not positive on what the numbers were but i checked them with gm and with my local dealer and with a thread on here. Im not sure if it is a vats problem the security light turns on for a few seconds while cranking and than turns off. Does that indicate a vats issue?

the new memcal has a silver sticker and That is the broadcast code. The ecm should give out a code 46 when you jumper the aldl. What was the reason to get the new memcal was the hypertech giving a code 51 ?

it was giving a code 51 and it was from an 87 vette i spoke to an old timer at hypertech and he told me the chips are not interchangeable. And i didnt have a stock prom. I have a snap on code scanner wouldnt the aldl jumping just put it in close loop mode

just turn the key on engine off and use a paper clip and jumper the a to b on the aldl. The memcals can interchange in the 1227165 for 32, 32B and $6e definitions. Im not sure if the 87 vette had the vats enabled on the programing but late 88 and 89 f-bodys have it enabled. If you have spark and no injector pulse theres your problem. You can check with a vom the key on the passkey module will send a 30hz at 50-60% duty 2.5v signal to pin B6 of the ecm.

I have always used noid lights you might try a led and 1k resister. noid lights are cheap or check the ecm for vats signal. It would be a shame to damage the new ecm to save a few bucks.

im going to check for the injector signal today and if it isnt pulsing i guess ill bypass the vats and start from there.

I used my vantage scanner to check for an injector pulse and it came up looking fine. HELP ME PLEASE BEFORE I BLOW THIS THING UP

what was the code That you had set ? so the story goes your car was running in limp home mode throwing a 51 and you changed the ecm and memcal and now it cranks but wont start ?

Yea it was a code 51, well when i first got the car it would barely run and only would start on ether. So i ohmed all the injectors and saw they were bad. Replaced them all as well as the MAF because the guy would spray the ether into the maf to get it running. After all that it started up fine and ran mediocre, not even good. I drove the car home running horribly and parked it. The next day i go to start it up and boom its dead, cranks no start, look at the codes its a code 51. Replace the ECM and Prom and now it just cranks wont even start or sputter.

is there a code set now ? You never mentioned the broad cast code letters on the new memcal. Have you checked for spark, fuel pressure, fuel fouled plugs, used a noid light just to visually verify injector pulse or you said your scanner verified this.

My scanner verified it, what is the broad cast code? i know for a fact that the new memcal is for a 89 GTA 5.7 TPI 700r4. I also checked for spark with the scanner and it said it was there but i dont trust it because i had to connect to many things i have a good old fashion spark tester i will use tomorrow. The coil did spec out tho at 18k ohms of resistance.

you might want to use a spark tester, fuel pressure gauge and noid light to determine whats going on.

You reeeally need a GM service manual! Its worth every penny and will answer 100% of your ?s without waiting for a answer.
43.5 (ish) psi is what your looking for.

A car needs air, fuel and spark to run. You are missing some of them, now you have to find which one and Y.
