New Intake Idea

I have been thinking about this for quite some time now and I think I can make it work. The runners would be based on the F.A.S.T. truck intake runner as shown in the pictures. Maybe the LSX. Also instead of alternating they would be paired in the typical SBC fashion.

The upper half of the runners would go into a Super Ram plenum. Of course a new bottom would have to be constucted. I would also have to modify the factory fuel rails but I have two old ones to modify.

The runners are available from F.A.S.T. but they are plastic and $441 for the set. I would like them to be of aluminum for welding purposes. I am also considering doing it with the LSX runners and have a complete used one on the way to play with. I could go either route and have added a picture of both runners side by side. Now how do I make the runners out of aluminum? Here are the pictures.

Re: New Intake Idea

you just love playing with intake mods, don't you?
i thought of trying something similar, but using a Vortec base.
but im almost always missing something, either i don't have the time, the money, the place, or access to the equipement.

Re: New Intake Idea

I've drawn up a number of drawings for SBC intakes that mimic the ls1 shape. The biggest hurdle that I could see was how to handle the front coolant ports and thermostat, but I'm sure that could be handled by a low profile passage and a remote thermostat housing.

Re: New Intake Idea

Talking to any number of people the best intake runner is one you can look down into and see the intake valve. Of course you have to take into consideration taper, tuned length, cross sectional area which all leads to the correct airspeed. The LS3 runner shown in the picture is also suppose to be real good.

My challenge is how to do it and still pass California Smog. That is the reason for hiding a good portion of it in a Super Ram plenum which is smog legal. The easiest way of course is with two plenums possibly connected together with one throttle body. Being in California and a street car that can't be done unless you have a real dummy for a smog tech which is not likely.

The way I envision doing it the thermostat and and water neck are not a problem. The only problem is with the factory fuel rail with the regulator it the way. I have two fuel rails at my disposal so they could be cut up and joined so that the fuel regulator would be move back out of the way of port 8. Using the LS3 style runner that factory fuel rail may be used as is. Will have to see.

Re: New Intake Idea

Big discussion going on over on Yellow Bullet regarding the whole intake system. Here is one of the money quotes.

"When you can look down through the throttle body and see the cylinder wall, you know you got something."

So, that is what I am going to try and do this year. Not the throttle body part, but the runner part because I will use a plenum with one throttle body. Try and utilize as straight a runner as I can.
