L98 TPI Build Plan (comments welcome)

88k original mile L98 GTA. Current mods are 3.70 rear gears, 3000rpm stall TC, shiftkit and LS1 aluminum driveshaft. Suspension mods are Koni yellows, Eibach Pro-kit, Spohn spherical strut mounts, and a UMI double adjustable panhard bar.

Exhaust plan:
Pretty standard. I have a used set of Hooker 2055 shorty headers and y-pipe that I'm getting media blasted and coated. This will be mated to a Magnaflow high-flow cat and the 16829 Magnaflow cat-back.

Transmission:
Full re-build with all new clutchpacks, vette servo, .500 inch boost valve, new TV cable and shift-kit (TransGo or B&M). The reason I'm doing all this is that the previous owner claims he installed the shiftkit and had the trans "built" for $3000 but I have no idea what else he did. Once the trans is apart for the re-build I'll find out more and these plans may change.

Intake:
New MAF sensor and cold-air intake (crappy ebay kit). I have a fully ported stock intake base that I will be putting on. I would like to get the plenum ported to match and pick up a set of SLP runners. All new Fel-Pro TPI gaskets.

Fuel:
New fuel pump, new injectors, AFPR. I would like to get a baffled tank, but that would be down the road and if I randomly had money sitting around.

Ignition:
New ignition coil, plugs, wires and a remote mini-starter while the exhaust is out.

Engine:
Lingenfelter 219 or Comp Cams XFI268HR cam. While the heads are off I will look into complete disassembly and a hot-tanking but at least a lot of new gaskets, new timing chain, 1.6rrs, new valve springs, hopefully a little head porting, 2 piece underdrive pulleys, and an A/C delete box.

Cooling:
New water pump, 160* t-stat, and an aluminum radiator.

The engine section is the part that I'm least sure about but my goal is a lopey, powerful cam that I can run with mildly ported/stock heads, 1.6rrs and LT4 or equivalent valve springs. Let me know what you think and I'll post progress as it goes.

Less stall AND NO 160 STAT! 180 minimum.

Ok 180* sounds fine. I'm sticking with the 3000 stall because it was in there when I bought it.

Lingenfelter 219 is a good cam but pricey theres other brands out there with almost the same grind for less money.

I went cheep my self $210.00 for a GM LT4 Hotcam compaired to doube the price for the Lingenfelter 219 and what I read the power out put not a lot of diffrence unless you planning to race it to win all the time is it worth it.

I pluged both cam spec's in my engine computer program theres very little diffrence between to 2 cams.

Nothing wrong with a 160 T-stat. (unless u drive it in the winter) esp with iron heads. use the correct 2ndary fan switch from hypercrap.

I get my trans parts from transmisioncenter.net . I dont know Danas site off hand but hear great things.
Advice: spend a bunch of coin on the trans parts the 1st time and be done w it.. pump, clutches, deep pan, ect ect

Re: L98 TPI Build Plan (comments welcome)

thats a nice overall setup your getting there...a lt4 hotcam would be nice in that motor its about 100 dollars cheaper than the other cams.. thats the cam i got now and its nice for a fun daily driver... i had a 10 inch 3000 stall in my old tpi.... it was alittle to high.it revved too much around town and gas mileage went down .. but i got the converter for a steal.. i should have went with a 2600 2800 max stall.....

88fastgta,
Did you touch your heads at all when you added the LT4 cam? What is that cam's range?

Re: L98 TPI Build Plan (comments welcome)

yeah i had them rebuilt with a three angle valvejob... i also put in manley springs retainers and screw-in studs to handle the lift of the hotcam.... the cam's range according to summit is 1800-5800.. its 218 228 duration 492 492 lift with 1.5 rockers...its a nice cam and you can really tell there is a cam in there so people know that im not stock... my power starts around 1500 and pulls hard to about 5000.... its my heads that are killing of the power and rpms...... i want afr heads to really take advantage of the cam and FIRST intake i got... once i get the heads i feel it will pull very hard to 5800-6000 rpms

Re: L98 TPI Build Plan (comments welcome)

If you go run a stroker motor Like I am this will bring the RPM range of the cam down lowwer it kick in about 1200 sign off around 5300 or so it a great street cam.

But the bigger the motor smaller the same cam will sound I can hear my cam in my 383 but in a 350 or 355 you going to hear it more.

The 383 is a TQ motor 500 starting at 2000 until 4800 RPM's you feel the Tq when you step on the Gas.
The TQ under 200 is like 420 it is a fun car to drive the HP at 200 is 210 the HP at 5000 is 435 you going to like it great street motor thats for sure.

The only big draw back if you have anouther car and when you drive it you sure going to miss that 383 LOL.

I am also using a 2500 stall Converter Now I kinda wish I tryed a 2800 stall instead The 2800 could be a little bit much but you never know untill you try it.

Re: L98 TPI Build Plan (comments welcome)

Well I just found out that my crankshaft has a hairline fracture in it and is causing the engine to knock. Looks like I will have to change my plans...

Re: L98 TPI Build Plan (comments welcome)

You have to buy a new Crank it is time to build a 383 they cost the same as a 350 crank.

You just make sure you get one you can use the 5.7 rods piston set are not all that much money If you go with the LT4 Hotcat the money that you saved from a CC cams you can now buy a set of pistons for the 383.
